This is a stunning serving platter made by Chelsea in about 1762, which is known as the "Gold Anchor" period of the factory. The platter is decorated in a bright puce ground and reserves with birds in flight and elaborate Sèvres style gilding. Chelsea was one of the very early adopters of porcelain in the British china industry. Founded in 1744 the Chelsea pottery was for about 40 years the leading maker of fine chinaware, excelling in their sense of style, perfection and constant innovation and inspiring many following generations of china makers. An exceptionally rare pair of 18th-century English Chelsea Gold Anchor Ornithological Themed porcelain cabinet plate of circular outline, and outstanding early Chelsea quality. Firmly attributed to artist James Giles who worked for Worcester, Derby, Bow and Chelsea (1745-1769). Each central reserve exquisitely hand painted with a standing exotic Peacock bird within branches of leafy foliage, the outer scalloped moulded gilt rim with similar decoration on a moulded basket weave surface. Condition: Exceptional condition for such early pieces, with no losses except for a tiny paint loss at edge of one, see image. Gold anchor mark verso for 1756-1769. This is a beautiful figure of a piper made by Edmé Samson in Paris some time in the 19th Century. The figure is in the style of Chelsea and marked with the Chelsea gold anchor mark. Edmé Samson was founded in Paris in 1845 and specialised in making replacements for valuable items of the French gentry and museums. They became so good at this that they eventually grew out to be the "great imitators" - not necessarily to fool anyone, but more to fill in gaps in collections that had arisen through breakage and wear, and to offer the new French bourgeoisie an affordable way to obtain pieces of top quality. This is how they came to create many items in the style of Sèvres, Meissen, Bow, Chelsea and Derby. The good Samson pieces are now highly collectable in their own right as they rival the quality of the originals. This very charming piper is stood upon a Rococo scroll with flowers at his feet, the remains of a previous bocage behind his back. The bocage has most probably been broken off.
