Dimensions incl. frame: approx. 50 x 45,5 cm. Depcited is a boy busy fleaing a dog. The boy sits on a chair with the dog on his lap. On a table on the right there is a book and a pen. On a wooden bench lies the boy's hat. What is unique about this painting by Ter Borch, is the relationship that is depicted between human and animal. Mostly animals like dogs where depicted as an attribute in paintings in the 17th century, and sometimes used to symbolize certain character traits. This boy is lovingly caring for his dog, which he is giving his full attention. Another interesting detail is that Ter Borch's brother Moses, was probably the model for this painting. Ter borch often used family members as models for his paintings. Moses was also a very talented painter and draughtsman. Several copies of this work by Ter Borch are known. One of these copies is in the collection of the Dutch Rijksmuseum (Image included in the image gallery (last image)). He is a versatile artist and designer, skilled in creating quality landscapes, portraits, architectural, western, religious and varied work in all media. After 36 years of architectural practice based in Houston in which he was involved in the design of more than 400 regional and international projects, he now devotes full time to painting. Best known of his art works are his designs of stained and faceted art glass which include 100 panels designed for the First United Methodist Church of Houston. In 1983, he wrote and jointly published with the Church, Windows Sharing God’s Caring, an art book with photographs by his wife Elizabeth, illustrating and describing these panels and the historic sanctuary windows. While attending The University of Texas in Austin he served as art editor of the university publication Architecture, Engineering and Industry (1938-41). After receiving his Bachelor of Architecture Degree and the Alpha Rho Chi Architectural Medal in 1941, he was awarded scholarships for continued studies a M.I.T., Harvard, and Yale. As a Naval Reserve Officer during World II, he authored and illustrated Naval Intelligence publications. This is a stunning painting of a racehorse signed and dated J F Herring Sen 1842. The horse is named above the water trough as Attilla. As Herring was a renowned painter of racehorses it is likely that this was done for a wealthy patron who owned several. He specialised in racing subjects and his few hunting scenes are rare. Herring painted the start of the 1844 Derby, which became known as ‘the dirtiest Derby in history’.
