Christopher Wool Prints and Multiples

American, b. 1955

Christopher Wool is a contemporary American painter. In his paintings, Wool contrasts bold stenciled text or abstract brushwork with white backgrounds. In the stenciled works and prints, words run together and breaks arrive at the edges of the canvas, as seen in his Apocalypse Now (1988), which bears the phrase “SELL THE HOUSE SELL THE CAR SELL THE KIDS.”

“With the painting the inspiration comes from the process of the work itself,” Wool reflected. “Like music [making the work] is an emotional experience. It’s a visual language and it’s almost impossible to put words to it.”

Born on September 16, 1955 in Boston, MA, Wool studied briefly at Sarah Lawrence College, but quickly left to enroll at the New York Studio School. A contemporary of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Julian Schnabel, Cindy Sherman and others in New York’s downtown art scene in the 1980s, Wool introduced graffiti techniques to his work, later incorporating silkscreens and paint rollers.

Wool's work has been exhibited at numerous institutions around the world, including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Gesellschaft für Moderne Kunst am Museum Ludwig in Cologne and the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Wool currently lives and works between Marfa, TX, and New York, NY with his wife the painter Charline von Heyl.

Howard Hodgkin Late Afternoon in the Museum of Modern Art abstract black white
By Howard Hodgkin
Located in New York, NY
Abstract black, white and tan print of interior scene with dots, lines, shadow and painted brushstroke texture. Ideal for display in minimalist, modern and contemporary spaces. While British pop artists such as David Hockney and Patrick Caulfield numbered amongst Howard Hodgkin's circle of friends, Hodgkin's work is painterly, expressionist, and abstract. Late Afternoon in the Museum of Modern Art by Howard Hodgkin. Soft-ground etching on buff BFK Rives mould-made paper. Edition 100: this impression 36/100. Signed by the artist, numbered 36/100, and dated 79 lower center in red crayon. Printed from the same plate as Early Evening in the Museum of Modern Art. Published by Petersburg Press. This print depicts an abstracted scene, perhaps a sculpture in front of a window in the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford, in Hodgkin's signature painterly style. The expressive mark-making in this print is an example of the artist’s movement in the late 70s towards pronounced gestures. Hodgkin used his hand as a mark-making tool, combining these textures with loose and urgent brushwork. Howard Hodgkin was introduced to the etching technique used in Late Afternoon in the Museum of Modern Art at Petersburg Press, where this print was produced and where he would become a long-time collaborator. This technique allowed him to work fluidly and spontaneously, creating the moody interior scenes that mark Hodgkin’s work from the late 70s and early 80s. Part of a series of four prints reflecting on a visit to the Museum...

Howard Hodgkin hand-colored Early Evening in the Museum of Modern Art
By Howard Hodgkin
Located in New York, NY
Large scale black and white abstract interior scene with dots, lines, brushstrokes, and hand painting in grey, to hang in contemporary, modern and minimalist spaces. While British pop artists such as David Hockney and Patrick Caulfield numbered amongst Howard Hodgkin's circle of friends, Hodgkin's work is painterly, emotional, expressionist, and abstract. Early Evening in the Museum of Modern Art, by Howard Hodgkin. Signed by the artist, numbered, and dated 79 lower center in red crayon. Soft-ground etching printed from the same plate as 'Late Afternoon in the Museum of Modern Art', with hand coloring in black gouache on Grey BFK Rives mould-made paper. This print depicts an abstracted scene, perhaps a sculpture in front of a window in the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford, in Hodgkin's signature painterly style. The expressive mark-making in this print is an example of the artist’s movement in the late 70s towards pronounced gestures. Wide areas of deep black pigment contrast urgent swipes of ink. Always seeking greater richness in his prints, Hodgkin layered ink and hand coloring in this print, rendering each impression in the edition unique. Souvenir, Howard Hodgkin: large scale black white gray abstract interior scene
By Howard Hodgkin
Located in New York, NY
Very large scale black and white abstract interior scene with dots, lines, brushstrokes, paint daubs, fingerprints, squares and rectangles. Striking print to hang in contemporary, modern and minimalist spaces. While British pop artists such as David Hockney and Patrick Caulfield numbered amongst Howard Hodgkin's circle of friends, Hodgkin's work is more painterly, expressionist, and abstract. Paper 45 x 55 in. / 114.3 x 139.7 cm. Souvenir by Howard Hodgkin. Screenprint on Arches aquarelle mould-made paper. Signed by the artist with initials and dated 80 in pencil lower center, numbered in pencil lower left. This bold Howard Hodgkin print layers five shades of black, with a wide variety of marks including some from the artist’s fingerprints and hand. Scribbles and lines of grey loosely define what could be an interior space with furniture. As is typical of his prints, there is a sense of space, and of the passage of time, expressed through shapes that seem to recede through the picture, deep black shades and, unusually for Hodgkin’s work, the white of the paper showing through. The last photograph displays these rich surface textures on the sheet at an angle. Catalogue reference: Elizabeth Knowles...

Giuseppe Capogrossi Iconic Comb Design "Superficie 324" Serigrafia
By Giuseppe Capogrossi
Located in Detroit, MI
"Superficie 324" is a 1988 screen print (serigraph) of a 1959 painting by Capogrossi. This is one of his famous "comb" or "fork" works that he perfected in the 1950s and continued to create for the remainder of his life. The blocks of primary red and yellow colors give a bright, joyful feel and contrast to the strong bold black that was Capogrossi's consistent color for the "combs". With no allegorical, psychological, or symbolic meanings, these structural elements could be assembled and connected in countless variations. Intricate and insistent, Capogrossi's signs determined the construction of the pictorial surface. This piece is identified along one side: Giuseppe Capogrossi By SIAE 1988 Silvio Zamorani Editor Via Saccarelli, 9 10144 Torino Italy Tel. (39)(11) 4730554 Progetto Grafico (Graphic Project): Studio Walter Benjamin. Serigrafia (Screen Print): BISI Torino. Capogrossi was born in Rome. After obtaining a degree in law in 1923–1924, he decided to study painting with Felice Carena at Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma. In 1927 Capogrossi embarked on a formative trip to Paris together with fellow artists and acquaintances Fausto Pirandello, Corrado Cagli and Emanuele Cavalli...

This work was included as part of a ‘Merde 3/4’: a scarce literary journal which Wool also contributed writing to. Signed on the reverse and lettered alphabetically from a limited edition of 26. Hand-signed, dated 2017 & numbered 'X' on the reverse from an edition 26 by Wool. Merde 3/4: Edited by Kyle Void, Merde was published as an ode to Rimbaud’s alchemy of colors and vowels. The publication features contributions by Christopher Wool, Richard Hell & more, with cover art by Richard Hell. Christopher Wool (American, b.1955) is an influential post-Conceptual artist, best known for his graphic, black and white word paintings. Wool grew up in Chicago, and relocated to New York City in the 1970s, where he enrolled in the Studio School with Abstract Expressionist painters Jack Tworkov and Harry Kramer. Wool eventually dropped out of school, and began experimenting with a new type of artistic process, using hand rollers to apply paint as a means of removing the painterly qualities from his work. In the late 1980s, Wool began creating word paintings, which featured alliterative statements, or phrases with the vowels removed, laid out in gridded patterns. In 1988, Wool, along with fellow artist Robert Gober, created a collaborative exhibition at 303 Gallery...
