Christopher Wool Abstract Prints
American, b. 1955
Christopher Wool is a contemporary American painter. In his paintings, Wool contrasts bold stenciled text or abstract brushwork with white backgrounds. In the stenciled works and prints, words run together and breaks arrive at the edges of the canvas, as seen in his Apocalypse Now (1988), which bears the phrase “SELL THE HOUSE SELL THE CAR SELL THE KIDS.”
“With the painting the inspiration comes from the process of the work itself,” Wool reflected. “Like music [making the work] is an emotional experience. It’s a visual language and it’s almost impossible to put words to it.”
Born on September 16, 1955 in Boston, MA, Wool studied briefly at Sarah Lawrence College, but quickly left to enroll at the New York Studio School. A contemporary of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Julian Schnabel, Cindy Sherman and others in New York’s downtown art scene in the 1980s, Wool introduced graffiti techniques to his work, later incorporating silkscreens and paint rollers.
Wool's work has been exhibited at numerous institutions around the world, including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Gesellschaft für Moderne Kunst am Museum Ludwig in Cologne and the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Wool currently lives and works between Marfa, TX, and New York, NY with his wife the painter Charline von Heyl.

Soft-ground etching with hand coloring in black gouache on grey BFK Rives mould made paper. Signed by the artist, dated 79, and numbered 59/100 lower center in red crayon. Printed from the same plate as 'Thinking Aloud in the Museum of Modern Art', this print was previously titled "Not Quite Alone in the Museum of Modern Art," suggesting an erotic dalliance in the museum.
This print depicts an abstracted scene, perhaps a window and a door, in Hodgkin's signature painterly style. The expressive mark-making in this print is an example of the artist’s movement in the late 70s towards pronounced gestures. Beside bold black strokes, his fingerprints form areas of texture. Always seeking greater richness in his prints, Hodgkin layered ink and hand coloring in this print, rendering each print in the edition unique.
Howard Hodgkin was introduced to the etching technique used in 'All Alone in the Museum of Modern Art' at Petersburg Press, where this print was produced and where he would become a long-time collaborator. This technique allowed him to work fluidly and spontaneously, creating the moody interior scenes that mark Hodgkin’s work from the late 70s and early 80s.

Christopher Wool (American, b.1955) is an influential post-Conceptual artist, best known for his graphic, black and white word paintings. Wool grew up in Chicago, and relocated to New York City in the 1970s, where he enrolled in the Studio School with Abstract Expressionist painters Jack Tworkov and Harry Kramer. Wool eventually dropped out of school, and began experimenting with a new type of artistic process, using hand rollers to apply paint as a means of removing the painterly qualities from his work.
In the late 1980s, Wool began creating word paintings, which featured alliterative statements, or phrases with the vowels removed, laid out in gridded patterns. In 1988, Wool, along with fellow artist Robert Gober, created a collaborative exhibition at 303 Gallery...

Provenance: Private collection, Los Angeles, CA. Reference: "Christopher Wool" by Katherine Brinson, page 255, No. 35. Sheet size: 36" x 24". There is some very light edge wear at lower left and right corner margins. The poster is in otherwise, overall excellent condition.
