Dan Budnik Portrait Photography
American, b. 1933
Dan Budnik (Long Island NY, 1933 – Tucson AZ, 2020) studied painting at the Art Students’ League of New York. After being drafted, he started photographing the New York school of Abstracts Expressionist and Pop Artists in the mid-fifties, making it a primary focus for several decades. He made major photo-essays on Willem de Kooning and David Smith, among many other artists. It was his teacher Charles Alston at the Art Students’ League of New York, the first African American to teach at the League, who inspired his interest in documentary photography and the budding Civil Rights Movement.
In 1957 he started working at Magnum Photos, New York, assisting several photographers, notably Cornell Capa, Burt Glinn, Eve Arnold, Ernst Haas, Eric Hartmann and Elliott Erwitt. In March 1958 Budnik travelled to live with the underground in Havana for 6 weeks during the Cuban revolution. Budnik continued to work with Magnum for half of his time, until joining as an associate member in 1963. In 1964 he left Magnum and continued specializing in essays for leading national and international magazines, focussing on civil and human rights, ecological issues and artists.
Since 1970 Budnik has worked with the Hopi and Navaho traditional people of northern Arizona, and received for this work a National Endowment for the Arts Grant in 1973 and a Polaroid Foundation Grant in 1980. In 1998 he was the recipient of the Honor Roll Award of the American Society of Media Photographers.to

Lora Webb Nichols was born in 1883 and grew up in the small mining town of Encampment, Wyoming. At the age of 16 Lora received her first camera and from that moment and for the next few decades she produced work that is both stunning in its singular voice and revealing in the world it opens up for us.
At first Nichols photographed her family, friends, and the landscape around Encampment, but when the town experienced a copper mining boom Nichols expanded her scope to become a photographer for hire shooting portraits and industrial photographs. When the boom collapsed, Nichols took the risk of opening her own business in Encampment - The Rocky Mountain Studio - which opened in 1925. The studio ran for ten years, accumulating 24,000 negatives that illustrate the lives and environment of the people living in and around the town while creating a distinctive and surprising body of work. If one was to attempt an analogy – Nichols’ pictures fit somewhere between Lartigue and Lange - joyful and generous while objectively intimate. In particular what seems to distinguish Nichols’ work is the way she sees the world from a female perspective. As Vince Aletti...

Madonna at Danceteria NYC 1983 Memorial for Michael Stewart photograph, Signed
By Eric Kroll
Located in New York, NY
Silver gelatin print
The present work is hand signed with the artist's copyright, dated 1983, and titled on the back. It is numbered 3 of an edition of only 10.
On October 3, 1983, Madonna headlined a memorial concert in honor of Michael Stewart, a graffiti artist in the midst of the AIDS crisis who became a victim of police brutality. Madonna was only 24 years old in 1983, but had already signed her first record deal and was on the cusp of superstardom. In 1984, the year after Madonna appeared in Kroll's shoot, she would release chart hits Like A Virgin, Material Girl and Crazy For You, cementing her place as an international star.
This photograph was taken by renowned photographer and editor Eric Kroll backstage at Danceteria - a gritty and popular after hours club and concert venue on West 21st Street in Manhattan, operating out of the first three floors in an old industrial 12-story building. The visible text "ACCUTUNKTIONA TO THE POINT!" and "UNK" are actual, gritty wall graffiti from the venue, adding to the candid nature of the shot.
Eric Kroll is a notable photographer, best known for his many fetish subjects, and for documenting America’s seediest spots and denizens, sharing a certain aesthetic with fellow photographers Larry Clark and Richard Kern...
