Dhiraj Chowdhury - Untitled - 14 x 10 inches (unframed size) ink on Paper ( Unframed & Door Delivered ) Style of the Artist : He steadfastly believes that art has to be closely associated with life – with humanity, with humanism. And he comes through with this concept in his works – which are sometimes heart – reading, sometimes violent, brutal even chaotic, but always cogent, modern, and somehow loaded with both wisdom and hope. Manayunk Schuylkill River Factory City Scene Philadelphia GIOVANNI MARTINO 1970
By Giovanni Martino
Located in Rancho Santa Fe, CA
Provenance: Private Collection, San Diego, CA. Framed Giovanni Martino, National Academy of Design* member, was born on May 1, 1908 in Philadelphia PA where all seven brothers and one sister, Filomina, Frank, Antonio, Albert, Ernest, Giovanni, Edmond, and William became painters. They were under the tutelage of their eldest brother, Frank, who in the late 1920s, founded the first commercial art* studio, Martino Studios, at 27 South 18th Street. Besides studying with his two eldest brothers, Giovanni also studied with Albert Jean Adolph at La France Institute, The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts*, The Graphic Sketch Club, and Spring Garden Institute in Philadelphia. In his mid teens he accompanied his two eldest brothers to New Hope searching for subjects to paint. In the 1930s, he also started to paint in Manayunk, a hilly mill town along the Schuylkill River. At this time he signed his paintings M. Giovanni. These colorful impressionistic* works proceeded more thinly painted dramatically poetic street scenes of the mill town. These images developed into impasto* laden oils in the 1960's with some of the paintings worked with a palette knife*. In Manayunk, he was a common sight on the streets and sidewalks, painting on-the-spot with his wife, Eva Marinelli and his two daughters, Nina & Babette. In the 1980's and 90's he also painted in Conshohocken and Norristown with his youngest daughter, Babette. His paintings became more sharply executed like his earlier work but were more colorful. In the late '90's he worked in his studio to enlarge paintings. He is the recipient of over 100 awards and honors. He received the Benjamin Altman Prize in Landscape Painting in 1975 at the National Academy of Design, NYC where he was elected an Academician (NA) in 1944. He mentored not only his wife and two daughters but also taught at Lehigh University and the Graphic Sketch Club, Philadelphia. He died at his home in Blue Bell on February 1, 1997. Ben Avraham Nahmani Israeli School Jerusalem Landscape Painting Doves of Peace
Located in Surfside, FL
Ben Avraham Nhamani Hand signed by artist to corner. Depicts doves over an archway leading to Old City Jerusalem Dimensions: Frame 18 X 23.5 image 8 X 13. Ben Avraham Nahmani is a self-taught artist who began painting in his native Meknes, Morocco at age seven. After his immigration to Israel he studied at the Avraham Ofek School of Art in Tel Aviv. He paints in an impressionist style and expresses his love and devotion to Judaism and Israel through varied media techniques including copper beating, pastel colors, and oil paints. Presently, he combines these various media which heighten the joyous tone of his works. Ben Avraham Nhamani draws his subjects from Jewish life, Kabbalah, faith and Jewish tradition. Each of his miniatures has its own motif but all of his themes are tied an overriding theme of world peace. Ben Avraham Nhamani says "Each painting is for me a special experience both spiritually and artistically as I express it here in a mixed-media: an integrated technique, combining different artistic mediums: pastels, acrylic paint, aquarelle, ink , spray oil; each technique lending its own effect to achieve the total harmonious presence of the work as a whole. The basis of corrugated cardboard of different layers adds depth to the painting and its meaning." One can recognize the holly city of Jerusalem surrounded by its wall and its famous gate living peacefully. Ben Avraham Nhamani adds: "The white dove symbolizes peace finally coming; it has an olive twig in its beak as it was when Noah sent a dove after the flood (which also symbolizes wars) to check then if the water dried out and the world could be a peaceful place to live. The dove hangs over Jerusalem and the city is even part of the dove's wing so peaceful it is. The flowers express beauty and growth that exist only when there is peace as well as prosperity represented here by the gold and silver colors. The ideal peace will exist when the Messiah son of David will come expressed here by the Shofar. His coming can be hurried by our good deeds and our longing for him. In microcosm Jerusalem represents every Jewish home which is the basis of the Jewish people and of one's life; spiritually, emotionally and physically as well as stated in the Talmud that the whole blessing a man receives is for his wife and a good wife is attuned to her husband as well. The Shofar expresses the nullification to Gd.'s will as it is at Rosh Hashana (the new Jewish Year) when we take upon ourselves the Yoke of Gd. In a couple or family it means that all the members make an effort and don't have it "their way" but "our way" by compromising." Ben Avraham Nhamani says "Each painting is for me a special experience both spiritually and artistically as I express it here in a mixed-media: an integrated technique, combining different artistic mediums: pastels, acrylic paint, aquarelle, ink, spray oil; each technique lending its own effect to achieve the total harmonious presence of the work as a whole. The basis of corrugated cardboard of different layers adds depth to the painting and its meaning." One can recognize the holy city of Jerusalem surrounded by its wall and its famous gate living peacefully. While their works bear a certain similarity this is not to be confused with Israeli Indian artist Edward ben Avram from Bombay, India. He has shown in prominent galleries in Safed, Tzfas with the other well known artists from the artists colony such as Nicky Imber, Shalom of Safed, Dorit Gur, Doron Cohen, Frenel Frankel, ·Kaszemacher, Raphael Abecassis...
