"Sculptor s Medal, " Art Deco Drawing of Nude, Bearded Sculptor and Goddess Diana
By Donald De Lue
Located in Philadelphia, PA
This bold and powerful drawing by Donald De Lue, who consistently sculpted in a high style Art Deco manner from the 1930s-1970s, was the final sketch for bas relief sculpture commissioned by Brookgreen Gardens in 1978. De Lue started his career executing several monumental granite reliefs for a Federal courthouse and post office in Philadelphia in the early 1930s, and for the following several decades produced dozens of important sculptures featuring attenuated, Mannerist figures. Here he depicts a nude male artist creating a sculpture of the goddess Diana, who hovers overhead with a crescent moon and stars. De Lue dated the drawing and dedicated it to Karen Tortorella. Brookgreen, established by Anna Hyatt...

Embracing Nudes
By Donald De Lue
Located in Los Angeles, CA
We purchased this from Child’s gallery many years ago, they represented the estate of the artist. Donald De Lue Large Org Drawing From Estate. Donald Harcourt De Lue is a 20th-century sculptor of monumental works in the Realist style. "His sculpture demonstrates artistic links to both Greco-Roman and late Renaissance sculptors," writes sculptor Jonathan L. Fairbanks in the "American Figurative Sculpture Catalogue" by Katherine Lane Weems for the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. "He emulated the exuberant gestures and energetic composition such as those found at Pergamum. The mature Michelangelo especially inspired De Lue to compose his figures with mannerist proportions, emphasized with highly articulated musculature. However, by combining these older influences with the ideas and techniques acquired during his French tour (taken after World War I where he was influenced by the work of the romantic sculptor Emile Antoine Bourdelle), De Lue developed his own synthesis. As he admitted, "Although my work is traditional, it is a tradition of my own'." De Lue, a child prodigy who apprenticed in his teens to American and British figurative sculptors, served as an assistant to American portrait artist, Bryant Baker...
