Antique 19th Century Victorian superb pair of Renaissance Revival electrotype wall chargers, created by Elkington & Co. The design, named "The Seasons," was conceived by Léonard Morel-Ladeuil, a masterful French goldsmith and sculptor known for his legendary contributions to Elkington's portfolio. The shields reflect Morel-Ladeuil's artistry, showcasing reclining maidens in high relief along the border, each symbolising astrological signs. The central cavetto displays intricate griffin scrolls, ringed planets, and plaques representing the months. One charger, representing January through June, features putti flying around floral arrangements, while the other, symbolising July through December, is adorned with harvest motifs. Together, they offer a beautiful homage to the seasons. Elkington & Co., known for its pioneering electroplating process, held Royal Warrants from Queen Victoria to King George VI. Morel-Ladeuil's collaboration with Elkington spanned 23 years, resulting in remarkable works such as this pair.
