An Emptiness I Needed to Know
By Eric Hesse
Located in Fairfield, CT
Hesse describes of his work, "encaustic is the perfect paint with which to explore this balance between control and chaos. In trying to wrestle a recognizable image from a fluid and often incorrigible medium, a tension emerges, echoing the drama outside the window."
Choosing to focus on the Los Angeles landscape, for Hesse, "the act of building is generally considered synonymous with growth and progress. In the cities I’ve called home, construction more often seems the imposition of one will upon another. Visually, the result is a sort of competition; angles wedge their way into vegetation and undaunted, the foliage always pushes back. All it takes is a look out of an airplane window...

View from the Train: Cityscape Oil Painting, View of Brooklyn
By Patty Neal
Located in Hudson, NY
View from the Train, 2019
24" X 40" x 1", oil on canvas
This contemporary oil painting depicting a metropolitan view is the work of realist painter Patty Neal. The painting offers an intimate view of the city, as seen from a window, as it peeks from behind two metal structures. The dark browns and bright golds beautifully compliment the dusty blue, gray sky. Neal works highlight everyday city scenes, utilitarian infrastructure, and industrial or electrical apparatus.
Artist statement:
A life is an accumulation of experiences: visual, emotional and mental. By compartmentalizing these snippets of life we create boundaries. The focus of my work for many years has been the exploration of these various life aspects and how they are bound together or bound from each other. My process is often literally composed of boundaries. I make a painting by putting together multiple panels, or I segment a single panel into separate visual spaces. The works are made up of pieces or elements of city and landscape. While exploring the concepts of boundaries I play with visual “reality.” Sometimes I combine images that are upside down with those that are not and juxtapose images from different contexts. Literal boundaries, such as walls fences, expanses of water and highway median strips are also used. My intent is to invite viewers to look beyond these boundaries to see the possibilities of a connected whole.

Venice Beach
By Carole Garland
Located in Palm Desert, CA
Depicts Carole Garland reveling in a hot summer day at the Venice Beach. Colorful beach umbrellas shield the timid from the burning sun while sunbathers bask in the searing heat. Yellow and blue ribbons floating on the wind celebrate Venice’s chaos and its whimsy.
To focus the figure of a preteen who stands sentinel, Garland fades out the foreground sunbather on right and obfuscates the crouching man on left. The artist leads us to the groups of mysterious standing and sitting figures in the shadows and beyond. Garland’s collection of figurative work speaks to a contemporary sensibility in her approach to painting, while expressing a curiosity about the human form and an irrepressible concern for the human spirit.
Carole Garland graduated from Knox College, Galesburg, Ill., studied at the Chicago Art Institute and the University of the Americas in Mexico City. She has worked privately with artists Keith Finch and Ron Pekar, taken numerous workshops and was mentored by David Gallup...
