Ernest Crofts Art
British, 1847-1911
Ernest Crofts was one of the most famous and successful military-historical painters of the late Victorian and Edwardian periods. He favoured historical subjects of the Napoleonic era and English Civil War.
Crofts had an outstanding knowledge of military costumes and built a large collection of original uniforms and militaria enabling him to depict these in minute and authentic detail. Crofts was also known to have sketched on various battlefields during the Prussian war with France and was present at the battle of Gravelotte.
Between 1867 and his death in 1911, Ernest Crofts exhibited 47 paintings at the Royal Academy in London, as well as at the Royal Society of British Artists. Crofts was made an Associate of the RA in 1878 and a full Royal Academician in 1896.to

A wonderful historical painting of a roundhead soldier standing outside a fortress by Ernest Crofts. The soldier is depicted wearing a back and breast plate over a red and yellow sleeved jacket tied with a sash around his waist. On his head, he wears a felt hat with red and white feathers and holds a sword in his hand. He is shown standing at the moated entrance of a fortified stone building with a portcullis. Beyond the raised portcullis, a group of soldiers can be seen in the shadows. The soldier’s uniform is typical of Cromwell’s famous ‘Ironside’ cavalry and indicates he is an officer, who, in Cromwell’s time would have earned his place based on merit rather than social status. Fine 19th century oil painting of a bustling Austrian/Germanic village with horse, rider and various figures outside an Inn, attributed to Arthur Georg Ramberg (1819-1879), well known for figurative genre paintings. The rider is carrying a bugle, apparently announcing news to the people; men are sitting by the table drinking, one with a raised stein.
