Gilded Age American Portrait by H. Hyneman, Signed and Dated 1885
By Herman Hyneman
Located in New York, NY
Herman Hyneman (1849-1907) Untitled, 1885 Oil on wood panel 13 1/2 x 10 1/4 in. Framed: 23 x 20 x 2 in. Signed lower left: H.N. Hyneman 85 The following is from Peter Jung who credits "a friend named Jeff Gold on Long Island." Herman N. Hyneman (1849 - 1907) was born in 1849 to one of the most prominent Jewish families in Philadelphia. Unlike most Jewish families of the time, his embraced and encouraged his artistic talent. In 1874, Hyneman followed his first cousin Moses Ezekiel, National Academy member, to Europe to study. They first went to Germany and then to France where Hyneman began eight years of study with Leon Bonnat, the French Master. In Paris, the twenty-five year old Hyneman resided in a studio building at 75 Boulevard Clichy, with expatriates Frederic Arthur Bridgeman, Charles Sprague Pearce, Milne Ramsey, and Edwin Blashfield. Hyneman was clearly exposed to the works of these more experienced artists, as well as that of Walter Gay. In 1879, one of Hyneman's genre paintings, entitled "Desdemona", was accepted into the Paris Salon. That painting received favorable reviews both in Europe, and later in Philadlephia where it was exhibited alongside the works of other Philadelphia Artists exhibiting at the Salon that included Thomas Eakins, Pearce, Edward May...

No Love Without Envy by Eugene Von Blaas
By Eugene von Blaas
Located in New Orleans, LA
Eugen von Blaas Italian I 1843-1932 No Love Without Envy Signed and dated "Eugen von Blaas 1901" (lower right) Oil on canvas Eugen von Blaas masterfully captured the spirit and charm of Venice, and No Love Without Envy stands as one of his most exceptional compositions. Larger and more finely detailed than many of his works, this grand painting reflects his unparalleled mastery of light, color and narrative. Rich in detail and emotion, this scene is believed to feature a stylized self-portrait of the artist alongside his wife, Paola Prina. Set in a sun-drenched Venetian courtyard, the composition brims with life and intrigue. At its center, an orange seller—modeled by Prina—engages in a flirtatious exchange with an admirer, the artist himself, while three onlookers observe with amusement and envy. The interplay of light and texture is remarkable: von Blaas' exquisite brushwork renders the delicate lace, sumptuous fabrics and intricately adorned garments with near-photographic precision, while the soft flesh tones contrast beautifully against the timeworn stonework of Venice. This attention to detail, combined with the work’s luminous palette, creates a sense of immediacy and warmth that defines the best of von Blaas' Venetian genre paintings. Born in 1843 to Austrian parents in Italy, von Blaas was raised in a household steeped in artistic tradition. His father, Karl Blaas, was a renowned portraitist and history painter, while his brother specialized in military scenes. When Karl was appointed professor at the Venice Academy of Fine Arts, the family relocated to the floating city—a move that profoundly shaped von Blaas’ artistic vision. Though he studied in Rome, Vienna and Paris, it was Venice that remained his greatest muse. Captivated by its light, architecture and everyday moments of romance and social interplay, he became the foremost painter of Venetian genre scenes. During Venice’s Austrian rule, von Blaas adopted the Italianized name “Eugene de Blaas...

The Water Carrier
By Eugene von Blaas
Located in New Orleans, LA
Austrian painter Eugen von Blaas’ unparalleled skill for genre painting is on display in this exceptional oil entitled The Water Carrier. The work captures a young Venetian woman during the course of her chores as she carries a filled water pail. Layer upon layer of fine glazes were applied to create the rich, blushing skin-tone of the Italian beauty, while her vibrant clothing lends an exoticism to the scene. She is the quintessential example of von Blaas’ preferred subject - spirited, salt-of-the-earth women who insouciantly engage in everyday tasks with the worn grandeur of the Italian countryside as their backdrop. Throughout his life, von Blaas followed a refined and detailed method of constructing lively genre scenes within a grand historical framework. His women are striking in their youth and unadorned beauty, feeling as though they have stepped through the annals of time. Similarly, his favorite setting would prove to be Venice, for it provided the artist with a timeless environment, remaining unaltered by the fast-paced changes brought about by the Industrial Revolution. Born to Austrian parents in Italy in 1843, von Blaas was raised in an artistic environment. His father, Karl Blaas, was a successful portrait and history painter as well as a sculptor, and his brother was a successful painter of military scenes. While the family had its roots in Austria, both von Blaas and his brother were born near Rome, and the family later moved to Venice when his father was appointed a professor at the Venice Academy of Fine Art. The young von Blaas soon after began to compose his famed Venetian scenes, as well as portraits and religious paintings for the Venetian elite. At that time, Venice was under the control of Austria thanks to the 1814 Treaty of Venice, which granted the territories of the Kingdom of Lombardy–Venetia to the Habsburg Emperor of Austria. Due to the dueling cultures in the region, von Blaas adopted the more Italianesque pseudonym Eugene de Blaas...
