Gabriel Perelle Landscape Prints

French, 1604-1677
Gabriel Perelle was a French draughtsman and printmaker, born in Vernon. He began his career as a pupil of the portraitist Simon Vouet, but swiftly specialised in classical landscapes not dissimilar to those of Francisque Millet. With his sons Nicolas and Adam, whose work is often highly similar to their father's, he founded a printmaking workshop which produced hundreds of printed views. Gabriel produced prints after numerous artists including Israël Silvestre, Paul Bril, Jacques Callot, Michel Corneille the Elder, Jan Asselijn, Jacques Fouquières, Cornelis Poelenburg, and Sébastien Pontault de Beaulieu - in short, the great topographical draughtsmen of the 16th and early 17th centuries. It was from these artists that Perelle developed his own style of draughtsmanship, with Callot and Silvestre among the foremost influences on his hand.

Cyanotypes were then made famous by Anna Atkins, considered the first female photographer. Inspired by nature, we feel the need to look back at a craft that is handmade, analogue, and using an all-natural light source: the sun. Our cyanotypes are made by coating high-quality Italian watercolor paper with a light-sensitive emulsion. We then expose it in direct sunlight for several minutes using a photo negative to get the best image quality. Finally, the print is washed and fixed with water to stop the reaction and prevent fading. What you get is an amazing, royal blue image...

Crossing the Fields - Original Etching by G. Perelle - Mid 17th Century
By Gabriel Perelle
Located in Roma, IT
Crossing the Fields is a fine black and white etching realized by the French old master, Gabriel Perelle (1603-1677). The circle etching represents a view, a natural landscape animated by peasants and surrounded by ancient Roman ruins. This original print is quite in good conditions: there is a sign of renovation on lower margin at the center(reparation of a rip) and a visible decoloration on the left margin. White passepartout included, cm 55 x 37.5. Gabriel Perelle (Vernon, 1604 - Paris,1677) was a French draftsman and printmaker of topographic views and landscapes. A pupil of Simon Vouet, Perelle was specialized in classical landscapes, as in our case, not dissimilar to those of Francisque Millet, although more obviously decorative. He founded an etching workshop, and his sons Nicolas and Adam assisted him. But Perelle was also a pupil of Daniel Rabel...
