Georg Jensen Jewelry

Over the course of its long history, the legendary Danish silverware firm Georg Jensen has partnered with a range of designers, widening its jewelry offerings from delicate filigree to chunky modern pieces.

Although Georg Jensen today is known the world over for its silver, the brand’s namesake founder began his creative career in a different medium, training as a ceramicist and sculptor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts before opening his own porcelain studio. It is that artistic background, however, that laid the foundation for Jensen’s eventual silversmithing — and a thread that continues today with the company’s distinctively sculptural, ornately detailed jewelry.

In 1901, Jensen left his ceramics practice to apprentice for Mogens Ballin, the master silversmith who also had a background as a painter. By 1904, he would establish Georg Jensen, now a global brand with more than 1,000 stores worldwide and a Royal Warrant of Appointment to the Queen of Denmark.

Like much of the work of the Art Nouveau movement of which he was a part, Jensen’s early creations erased the barrier between art and craft, bridging form and function for pieces that demonstrated masterful artistry in both. His silverware was immediately a commercial success and he was a pioneer in using steel in cutlery.

Jensen’s jewelry pieces — his pendants, rings and more, crafted most often in silver during the early 1900s — display a celebration of nature, rendering flora and fauna in silver, gold and gemstones. Fish and full-bloom daisies are charming motifs in his vintage sterling-silver brooches and necklaces, while semiprecious stones such as malachite and coral were integrated as embellishments.

Creatives with Georg Jensen jewelry in their portfolios include architect Edvard Kindt Larsen; designers Arne Jacobsen, Jean Nouvel and Ilse Crawford; artist Henning Koppel and silversmiths Vivianna Torun and Ibe Dahlquist. Such a transcendence of medium — a continuation of Art Nouveau sensibility — has resulted in over a century of stunningly creative, varied designs.

In a country with no shortage of design talent, Georg Jensen has long been somewhat of a national treasure — and sometimes even a political statement. In 1940, five years after Jensen died, Arno Malinowski’s “King’s Emblem” pin became widely recognized as a symbol of resistance to the Nazi regime. Its influence is global, too: In 2014, Murray Moss penned Georg Jensen: Reflections, a Rizzoli-published retrospective marking more than a century of business for the brand.

Find all manner of authentic Georg Jensen jewelry on 1stDibs, including vintage sterling-silver bracelets, decorative rings and more.

Modernist Georg Jensen Astrid Fog Large Sterling Silver Cross Bars Necklace
By Georg Jensen
Located in New York, NY
Scarce large 1970's Scandinavian Modernist sterling silver cross bars necklace by Astrid Fog for Georg Jensen. Astrid Fog (1911-1993) designed her first jewelry collection for Georg Jensen in 1969. Her jewelry designs are distinctive for their large scale and bold, modernist style using classic geometric forms such as rectangles, circles and squares. She successfully utilized high quality lightweight, hollow silver forms to create pieces which were striking as well as comfortable to wear. This beautiful necklace is from the estate of a noted New York City psychiatrist who collected interesting, unusual, often one-of-a-kind jewelry. The pendant measures 2.19 inches by 2.19 inches. The chain is 29 inches long. Marks: 379 925 S Denmark Georg Jensen...

Will fit up to 16 inch neck, pendant drop approximately 2.75 inches, width of agate 2 inches. Item Weight: 123 grams. Ref: The Jewellery Box Jens Ingvordsen P.275. Vivianna Torun Bülow-Hube know as Torun, was born 1927 in Malmo, Sweden. Torun was the first woman silversmith in the world to gain international recognition. She studied at Konstfack, the School of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm, beginning in 1945 while pregnant with her first child, Pia. Eventually she married the child's father, a Danish journalism student. In 1948, Torun spent the summer in Paris meeting Picasso, Braque, Matisse, and the other great artists of the day. She married a French architect and lived in Stockholm until 1956 having a second child, a son, Claude. As early as 1952, Torun exhibited her jewelry, made both in Stockholm and France (and bearing hallmarks from each country) in Paris. In 1956 she moved to France with her third husband, Walter Coleman. She designed jewelry for among others, Billie Holiday which Holiday wore when she performed. The couple moved to Biot in the south of France. Torun produced many pieces during this period when young Swedish silversmiths would come to work in her studio, introducing her to new techniques. Torun renewed her acquaintance with Picasso who lived in the area and an exhibition of Torun jewelry...

To tell if jewelry is vintage or antique, first look for any hallmarks that signify its maker. You can use trusted online resources to research when the maker was active and producing pieces similar to yours to roughly estimate its age. Jewelry is vintage if it's between 20 and 99 years old, and antique if it is 100 years old or more. If you're unable to locate a maker's hallmark, becoming familiar with the materials and other characteristics used during different eras of jewelry can help you date your piece. When in doubt, enlist the help of a certified appraiser or knowledgeable dealer. On 1stDibs, explore a large collection of vintage and antique jewelry.
