George Paice Art

British, 1854-1925
George Paice (1854–1925) was an accomplished English artist celebrated for his exquisite equestrian and animal paintings. Born in Pimlico, London, Paice demonstrated an early affinity for art and attended prestigious institutions such as the Royal Academy of Arts, where he honed his technical skills and refined his distinctive style. Paice specialized in painting horses, dogs, and other animals, often commissioned by wealthy patrons, landowners, and aristocrats to immortalize their prized animals on canvas. His works are characterized by their lifelike detail, elegant composition, and an ability to capture the personality and vitality of his subjects. Paice's mastery of texture and anatomy enabled him to produce vivid and emotive representations of animals, making his portraits cherished heirlooms. While his primary focus was on animals, Paice also painted rural landscapes and hunting scenes, offering glimpses into the pastoral life of the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. His art was admired for its traditional aesthetic and timeless appeal, standing apart from the emerging modernist movements of his time. Paice's paintings remain highly sought after by collectors and are frequently found in country houses, galleries, and private collections. His work preserves a legacy of Britain's equestrian culture and rural heritage, continuing to resonate with audiences who appreciate classic animal portraiture.

Fine British Sporting Art Antique Oil Painting Portrait of Horse in Stable 1891
By George Paice
Located in Cirencester, Gloucestershire
"Flexible" by George Paice (1854-1925) British signed and dated 1891 titled oil painting on artists board, 8.75 x 12 inches framed condition: overall very pleasing and good provenance: from a collection in the south of England George Paice (British 1854-1925), came from a wealthy family and although not a horseman himself, he had a keen and sensitive equine eye and had a personal interest in racing. He was fairly prolific during his lifetime and made a very good living from private commission work and so consequently did not feel the need to show his work much at public exhibitions. He exhibited seven times at the Royal Academy with titles such as “Haunt of the Moorhen”, “Tis weary waiting here” and “Well earned repose” and four times at the Royal Society of British Artists including one titled “Meditation”. This subject matter is different from the majority of his work known today. He received a lot of commission work to paint horses and dogs and in this he was very competent in depicting his subject matter. One of his patrons was Lady Margaret Cecil. Besides his small format horse and dog portraiture for which he is best known today, Paice produced a small number of large, fine point-to-point scenes, one of which was painted for the Officer`s Mess of the Royal Scots Greys...
