George Stainton Art
British, 1838-1900
George Stainton is a little known artist who was capable of painting very attractive and professional Sea Pieces. George Stainton had a predilection for sunset and dawn scenes. He is rather curiously listed in Benezit as a Landscape Painter but most of his output was in fact Marines, often of vessels in calms seas with soft lighting. He seems to have been influenced by the Dutch School in that respect, and in particular Abraham Hulk. He was not known to have exhibited at the London Galleries. Despite this his paintings are most attractive and have been gaining in reputation and price since Brook-Hart wrote about him in his work on 19th Century Marine Painters. Label on reverse records his address as Moseley, Birmingham.to

Announcement in Village Square mid 19th century
Located in Hillsborough, NC
Fine 19th century oil painting of a bustling Austrian/Germanic village with horse, rider and various figures outside an Inn, attributed to Arthur Georg Ramberg (1819-1879), well known for figurative genre paintings. The rider is carrying a bugle, apparently announcing news to the people; men are sitting by the table drinking, one with a raised stein. Women walking by stop to listen, a man carrying a sack has stopped to watch the rider, people are in the Inn doorway, and one is looking out the window. Children pause their playing. The scene is under a large tree beside the Inn; a whole community waiting for news.
There is a great deal of detail in the scene, tree and Inn house...

Evening on the Thames
Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1875, transcribed verso (sic)
Image size: 13 inches x 19 inches
Size including frame: 19.75 inches x 25.75 inches
This atmospheric seascape by George Stainton features ships and fishing boats on the Thames at sunset. In the foreground, a fisherman hauls in the last of his catch whilst hay barges make their way to the shore.
George Stainton was a marine and landscape artist who was born in Aston, Birmingham in October 1838 to John Stainton and Ann Horton. By the age of 12, he was working as a Papier-mâché painter and then later as a Japanner before becoming a full-time artist. He specialised in painting seascapes and river scenes in the style of Abraham Hulk and was influenced by the Dutch school.
He exhibited at the Royal Society of Birmingham Artists from 1865 and also at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. He married Clara Adelaide Mason on 8 November, 1866 and together they lived in Addesley Street, Aston. The couple had 8 children and one of their sons Ernest Stainton became a lithographic artist. By 1881, Stainton had moved to nearby Moseley Road where many Birmingham artists of the industrial period lived and also took up photography. Sometime during the late 1880’s early 1890’s, he moved to 14 St Pauls Road, Kings Norton. He died at Kings Norton in 1900.
Whilst Stainton lived in Birmingham all his life, he travelled around the country painting coastal views of the Bristol Channel...
