Gerhard Morgenstjerne Munthe Landscape Paintings

Gerhard Arij Ludwig "Morgentjerne" Munthe (Düsseldorf, 1875 – 1927, Leiden) was a German-born painter of Norwegian origin, who spent most of his career in the Netherlands. He mainly painted beach scenes in the style of the Hague School.
He grew up in Düsseldorf and attended art school there. At an early age, Munthe added the poetic epithet 'Morgentjerne' (Norwegian for morning star) to his name, to distinguish himself from his uncle and namesake Gerhard Peter Frantz Wilhelm Munthe, then a well-known landscape painter.
Munthe was strongly influenced by the painters of the Hague School, more in particular Jacob Maris, Hendrik Willem Mesdag and Anton Mauve.
Munthe was a prolific painter. His work can be seen in the Kröller-Müller Museum (NL) and the Katwijks Museum (NL), among others.
