Born in 1858, Henry H. Parker was a British artist working at the end of the Victorian era. It is believed that he was born and lived in London, where he studied at Saint Martin's School of Art. Parker started his working life as an illustrator for the Illustrated London News, and by the age of 23 had become known as a landscape painter.
Parker's landscapes are lush and tranquil, frequently featuring a lone figure in a boat or walking down a country path. The scenes are often sunny and bright and the waters are calm and soothing.
Parker's style shows a great influence by the Impressionists, through his use of bright colors and quick brush strokes, but a definite understanding of the academic principles is also displayed. This style of painting was very typical for the late Victorian landscape artists who strove to incorporate the new Impressionist techniques in their more traditional paintings. Parker's landscapes and skies were created with a free but controlled application of paint, while the watery areas of his work were handled in the more traditional way — using glazes to create depth and reflections. His paintings are well composed, beautifully balanced and capture the landscape in its most pure and natural state. This colorful and free look was a welcome relief to the traditional Victorian landscapes of the previous decades and this, coupled with Parker's choice of subject matter, brought him great success.
Parker painted mainly in the South East of England, in Surrey, Sussex, and along the Thames where he frequently stayed at Goring and Streatley. He also painted in the Worcestershire area and in Wales. He would often sign and title his works, with their exact location, on the reverse.
Throughout his life, Parker enjoyed widespread popularity as an artist, and this is today witnessed by the number of his works consigned to galleries and museums throughout the world. From 1923 onward, Parker exhibited in the United States, especially in Chicago, where he was unable to meet the demand for his pictures. His paintings were also popular with the Canadians and were hung in all the leading clubs throughout Canada and the States.
Of final note, it is very interesting that Parker was one of only a handful of artists, of his caliber, to never exhibit at the major exhibition halls in England during his lifetime and whose popularity has increased over the years. Parker's works can be found in the following museums and galleries: Birmingham, Liverpool, Eastbourne, Hartlepool, Bradford (England); the Manitoba Club, Winnipeg, St James's, Montreal (Canada); and the Auckland Museum (New Zealand).

This attractive scene featuring Doeford Bridge near Clitheroe is by Henry H Parker. Two figures can be seen on the bridge overlooking the river Hodder. Doeford Bridge is located in Bowland Forest Low, Lancashire, 9 miles north-west of Clitheroe between Chipping Village and Whitewell. It spans over the river Hodder, near the confluence of the rivers Hodder and Loud. The bridge was built around 1770 and was constructed with squared sandstone blocks formed into 2 segmented arches with a central triangular cutwater. It was made a grade II listed building by Historic England in 1952.

The former Curator of Oil Paintings at the National Maritime Museum, E H H Archibald, says of Joseph Heard in his Dictionary of Sea Painters in Europe and America that "…with Samuel Walters he must stand as the top-ranking Liverpool ship portraitist of the 19th century." Born in New York, Professor Lemos moved to San Francisco in 1887 where he established a studio at 106 Geary Street. He later moved to Santa Cruz in 1896, where he settled, painting murals for many local businessmen and the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.
As a boy Lemos earned money by wandering the streets and painting on request. Arriving in San Francisco in 1887, he established a studio at 106 Geary. With his wife Mabel, he worked in Los Angeles for a few years in the 1890s. After settling in Santa Cruz in 1896, he painted murals for many local businessmen. When the original Beach Casino was built there at the Boardwalk in 1904, Lemos was the first concessionaire and worked there for nearly 40 years. On his platform in the Casino, Lemos did paintings of redwoods, still lifes, forest fires, beach scenes, and marines. Many of his oils were done on redwood slabs which were popular with the tourists; in the early days these paintings sold for one dollar and up depending on the size of the work. After his vision failed and he was unable to paint, his last years were mostly spent fishing off the Municipal Pier with a friend who baited his hook for him because he could no longer see. In the March 27, 1941 Santa Cruz Sentinel News Lemos reminisced, "Them were the days when the Boardwalk was only twelve feet long and when business got slow I picked up my shotgun and went across the street and shot ducks where the Casa del Rey Hotel now stands." Exhibited: Calif. State Fair, 1885; Mechanics' Inst. (SF), 1889. In: Santa Cruz City Museum; Wawona Hotel (Yosemite).

His mother was Julia Lemos, a Chicago artist famous for her depiction of the Chicago fire, “Two of Julia’s children became successful artists. Her eldest son, William, was a naïve still life, landscape, and mural painter. As a young boy in New York, he would wander the streets, earning money for the family, by ‘painting on request.’ At age 26, William moved to San Francisco, California. He opened an art studio and kept it running until he moved to Santa Cruz with his wife, Mabel, in 1896. During this period, he worked as a fresco artist painting ‘murals for many local businessmen.’
