Henry Koehler Art

American, 1927-2018
One of the top sporting artists in the world, Henry Koehler was born in Louisville, Kentucky. He attended Yale University and his long association with the sporting life began soon after his graduation from Yale. His illustrations appeared in The New Yorker, Town Country and Sports Illustrated. His first exhibition was in 1961 and since that time he has had 67 one-man A exhibitions in London, Paris, Dublin, Johannesburg and throughout the United States. Racing and hunting come alive under his brush. He also offers us a behind-the-scenes look at jockeys, horses, dogs and the special accoutrements of each sport. Among his collectors are prominent people from the political, social and sports arenas. His works can be seen at the National Racing Museum in Saratoga and at the National Horse Racing Museum at Newmarket in Great Britain. Mr. Koehler lives in Southampton, New York. "He has painted several commission portraits of well-known thoroughbreds but prefers genre pieces depicting horse racing, polo, and hunting in the field with horses. He also does studies of jockey figures before and after their race. An July-October 2003 exhibition, Elegant Impressions of Turf and Field, was held at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Literature: Förteckning på oljemålningar, aquareller och handteckningar m.m. av Egron Lundgren utställda i Akademien för de fria konsterna, 1876, no. 259. Karl Asplund, Egron Lundgren, Vol. II, 1940, p. 40, note 1, p. 166. Exhibited: The Royal Academy, Egron Lundgren, 10 April 1876, no. 259. The Royal Academy, Svenska Akvareller (Swedish Watercolor Exhibition), 1925, no. 224, Vilande kameler (owner Signe Trygger). Essay: This delicate watercolour, executed during Lundgren’s first journey to Egypt in the winter of 1861–62, depicts a resting dromedary in the shade at Giza. Painted in transparent washes with touches of white gouache, the work captures the intense desert light and atmosphere with a remarkable immediacy. The reclining animal dominates the composition, rendered in warm ochres and browns against a cool, shadowy background, while highlights on its saddle and coat give the scene a subtle radiance. The quiet stillness of the subject reflects Lundgren’s sensitivity to the everyday motifs of the Orient, which he observed and painted directly on site. Lundgren travelled to Egypt in the company of two British artists, Frank Dillon (1823-1909) and George Price Boyce...

Through various mediums, she creates poignant reflections of societal and cultural issues that have shaped the Welsh identity. Born in 1981, Elin Siân Blake began producing commissioned artwork from an early age, focussing on the traditional Welsh ponies and landscapes of her childhood. She was particularly inspired by the agricultural and equestrian events she attended. As a teenager she spent all her spare money on art supplies. Blake graduated from the University of Glamorgan in 2002 with a degree in graphic design and illustration, but quickly realised that she wanted to create conventional paintings, rather than producing digital images. She then spent several years living on the road in vintage vehicles, painting the scenes and characters she encountered on her travels. Blake taught herself oil painting using library...
