American, 1870-1937
Born in Leesburg, Virginia in 1870, Breckenridge drew incessantly as a child, and through the encouragement of his teacher Paul Laughlin, he decided to pursue a career as an artist. When he turned fifteen, his parents reluctantly allowed him to open a studio in Leesburg so that he could earn the tuition necessary to attend the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. In 1887, he enrolled in the Academy, an institution with which he would be affiliated for the majority of his life. Breckenridge won the Academy’s Charles Toppan’s First Prize in 1890 and in 1891, he was awarded the Cresson Traveling Scholarship, which allowed him to pursue his dream of continuing his studies abroad.
Breckenridge went to Paris in 1892 and enrolled in the Académie Julian as a student under William Bouguereau, William G. Ferrier, and Lucien Doucet. The academic training Breckenridge received proved beneficial for the portrait work he often did to earn a living, but he was more interested in nonacademic approaches to art. Like many artists at the end of the nineteenth century, he responded enthusiastically to the new and exciting changes in art that were rapidly taking place in Europe and America. He was particularly interested in the exploration of color and color theories. During his time in Paris, he became captivated with Impressionism and his paintings soon began to reflect that interest. Upon his return to the States in 1893, he experimented with Impressionist techniques of painting color and light in landscapes, figurative paintings, and portraits.
Back in Philadelphia, Breckenridge began his lifelong teaching career. He first taught classes at the Springside School for Girls in Chestnut Hill, Pennsylvania. In addition, he was offered the post of Secretary of the Faculty at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1894 and taught there until his death in 1937. In 1900, he and Thomas Anshutz opened the Darby Summer School of Painting outside of Philadelphia, which they relocated to Fort Washington, Pennsylvania, in 1902. Although Anshutz died in 1913, Breckenridge maintained the Darby School until 1918. From 1920 until 1937, he ran the Breckenridge School of Art in Gloucester, Massachusetts, during the summer months.
During his second trip abroad during the summer of 1909, Breckenridge was exposed to the latest experiments in painting led by the Post-Impressionists and the Fauves. These experiences made him an early convert to Modernism, which he pursued in his paintings upon his return to America. He kept abreast of the Modernist movement through visits to Alfred Stieglitz’s 291 Gallery in New York, and he subscribed to Stieglitz’s highly influential journal of avant-garde art, Camera Work. In 1913, he shared a studio with Arthur B. Carles in the Fuller Building in New York. The two painters became very close, often painting the same subjects and in the same manner, inspired by Paul Cézanne’s structural brush work and Matisse’s vivid colors. This resulted in what Breckenridge called his “‘tapestry paintings,’ which combined broad, checkerboard brushwork with a vigorous Neo-Impressionist technique.”to

Born in Russia, the son of Friede (1878 – 1956) and Benjamin Hoffman (1878 – a. 1942). Benjamin was a dealer in mineral and seltzer water and the family resided on Snediker Avenue in Brooklyn, New York, just down the streetfrom the home where George Gershwin (1898 – 1937) was born.
This area of Brooklyn, known as Brownsville, “witnessed the development of one of the largest communities of Eastern European Jewish immigrants during the last decade of the 19th century and the first two decades of the 20 th century.” Today, little remains of this once thriving Jewish section of Brooklyn, which today houses many commercial and repair businesses.
Hoffman studied at the Art Students League of New York, the National Academy of Design and in the art program at Cooper Union. His work at the National Academy received praise, and in 1921 he was awarded the 2nd prize and an honorable mention from the John Armstrong Chaloner Paris Prize Foundation at the National Academy, which allowed the recipient to study in Paris, France for as long as five years. The following year he was awarded the 1 st prize in the competition (with The Reform Advocate running the headline “Young Jew Wins Art Prize”) as well as the Suydam Bronze Medal for his achievements in the Academy’s Men’s Night Class. In 1923 he was residing in Long Branch, New Jersey, when he was awarded 4th place in the Chaloner competition.
Early on, Hoffman exhibited his work throughout the city, including in 1925 with the recently organized Society of Independent Artists. He also received several solo exhibitions during the first part of his career, including one at Ferargil Galleries in 1929. In the spring of 1930 a solo exhibition of his portraits, including paintings and drawings, was held at at Babcock Galleries, where a reviewer noted: “Portraiture is obviously Mr. Hoffman’s specialty… his best work is characterized by a sensitive appreciation of character set down in a vigorous decisive statement.
Later that same year, in August, he participated in Babcock’s summer exhibition where reviewer Jerome Klein, writing for The Baltimore Sun, felt Hoffman’s and other artists work was already becoming old fashioned, remarking “…if an effort toward accomplishment is to be made, it must be in the language of today. It is for that reason that such contemporaries as Eugene Higgins and Nathan Hoffman, in this show, seem artists of a bygone era…” The onset of the Great Depression appears to have slowed his success, as was the case for many up-and-coming artists.
By 1939 Hoffman had become a gallerist in addition to being a painter, operating the collective exhibition space “Sutton Gallery,” which was originally located at 358 East 57th Street. Henry Ottmann was born on 10 April 1877 in Ancenis.
He made his debut at the Salon La Libre Esthétique in Brussels in 1904 and took part in the Salon des Indépendants in Paris from 1905, the Salon d'Automne, the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts and the Salon des Tuileries.
In 1911 and 1912, Ottmann exhibited at the Artistes de la Société Moderne at the Gallery Paul Durand-Ruel together with Armand Guillaumin, Henri Lebasque and others. In 1912, he exhibited at the gallery Eugène Druet.
