Janet Rickus Paintings

American

You can’t take a bite out of Janet Rickus’s artworks, although you may want to. A true virtuoso of still life paintings, Rickus creates impeccable Photorealistic depictions of fruits, vegetables and tableware staged on linen-draped tables that would leave even the world’s greatest chefs jealous of her expertise with the art of presentation.

For Rickus, capturing the lifelike qualities of each food requires an incredible amount of concentration, precision and patience. It did not, however, require formal training. The artist is mostly self-taught and has worked to grow her skills for over three decades dating back to her inaugural exhibitions in the early 1990s.

Rickus has had solo and group exhibitions at Hoorn-Ashby Gallery in New York City and has shown her work at the Museum of Fine Arts in Springfield, which is near her hometown of Chicopee, Massachusetts. Rickus was a recipient of an artist grant from the Mass Cultural Council in 2006.

Evident in her meticulous arrangements of colors and shapes, Rickus knows what she likes to paint and how she likes to paint it — she uses only natural light and everything is painted its actual size. Despite her parents owning a grocery store when she was a child, Rickus’s choice of subject has everything to do with textures and stability. Produce is the ultimate portrait subject — unique and completely unmoving so that she gets every delicious detail just right.

View from the Train: Cityscape Oil Painting, View of Brooklyn
By Patty Neal
Located in Hudson, NY
View from the Train, 2019 24" X 40" x 1", oil on canvas This contemporary oil painting depicting a metropolitan view is the work of realist painter Patty Neal. The painting offers an intimate view of the city, as seen from a window, as it peeks from behind two metal structures. The dark browns and bright golds beautifully compliment the dusty blue, gray sky. Neal works highlight everyday city scenes, utilitarian infrastructure, and industrial or electrical apparatus. Artist statement: A life is an accumulation of experiences: visual, emotional and mental. By compartmentalizing these snippets of life we create boundaries. The focus of my work for many years has been the exploration of these various life aspects and how they are bound together or bound from each other. My process is often literally composed of boundaries. I make a painting by putting together multiple panels, or I segment a single panel into separate visual spaces. The works are made up of pieces or elements of city and landscape. While exploring the concepts of boundaries I play with visual “reality.” Sometimes I combine images that are upside down with those that are not and juxtapose images from different contexts. Literal boundaries, such as walls fences, expanses of water and highway median strips are also used. My intent is to invite viewers to look beyond these boundaries to see the possibilities of a connected whole. #392
By Tiffany Calvert
Located in New Orleans, LA
Calvert’s current paintings investigate the relationship between digital media and the reception and perception of images, and utilizes diverse technologies such as fresco, 3D modeling, AI and data manipulation through code. She is especially interested in the evolution of pictorial space. Today we view our screens and the world they occupy as a shallowly layered space of overlapping desktop windows. The picture plane has tilted up again from the flatbed to float in front of our eyes. Calvert’s paintings in turn depict an intermediate space, where the verticality of the still life paintings cohabitate with these digital panes. Dutch floral still life paintings encapsulate multiple concerns. Their subjects were botanical fantasies, emblems of an economic mirage that has contemporary corollaries. Most important to Calvert’s pictorial concerns, they depict ephemeral things in shallow and diagrammatic space - they are all foreground. They contain an abundance of visual information in overwhelming density, creating an allover resolution; a visual field that is equivalent to digital noise. By making painterly interventions into reproductions, Calvert attempts to dissolve the layer between the resolution of the source image and abstraction of the painted mark. ⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯ Tiffany Calvert has exhibited her work in the US and abroad including Lawrimore Project in Seattle, E.TAY Gallery in New York, the Speed Museum in Louisville and Cadogan Contemporary in London. Residencies include the Djerassi Resident Artists Program, I-Park, and ArtOmi International Arts Center where she received a Geraldine R. Dodge Fellowship. Calvert has received grants from the Great Meadows Foundation and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. Her work was recently profiled by critic John Yau in the online journal Hyperallergic. Her curatorial projects include “Some Abstraction Occurs” at 65GRAND Gallery in Chicago and “Magic” at Mercer College (featuring work by Chris Martin, Karla Knight, and Sarah Peters...
