Jean Patou was a French fashion designer and founder of the Patou brand. His family's business was tanning and furs. He worked with his uncle in Normandy, then moved to Paris in 1910, intent on becoming a couturier.

Having cut his teeth working for Thierry Mugler and Dior, Alaïa himself designed garments with immaculate fit and a sexy yet romantic flair. From his Spring 2000 collection, the gored maxi skirt is made from a viscose blend black chenille fabric.
