Jeffrey Maron Mixed Media
American
Jeffrey Maron is an artist with a long history of exhibits in New York City and elsewhere. He is the recipient of three grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, a Fulbright-Hayes Grant to Japan and an award from the Jackson Pollock/Lee Krasner Foundation. Maron's work is in many corporate, public and private collections. A two-year Fulbright-Hayes Grant for sculpture allowed the artist to live and work in Japan, where he continued to be influenced by cultures of the world dedicated to animism, the worship of an inclusive natural order. Maron's art has a definite connection to our spiritual identity and is not directly derived from any of the main currents of contemporary art. His work is characterized by paradoxes. It is both tough and beautiful, religious and sensual, reminiscent of familiar symbols but clearly unique. "Cultures that see themselves as part of a greater natural order usually create compelling art to which we are all drawn. I see my art as contemporary animism and feel it is attached to the metaphors of this neglected paradigm. I try to create art that will remind people of our spiritual essence. By creating art that communicates this without words, I am participating in an important ongoing spiritual transformation happening in the world today. The activities of my hands are transformative to the materials involved in the creation of my art. My hands know how to change an image or form, into something more than just the reformed material. This necessitates the metamorphosis of the material with a specific energy and intent. This process is difficult to delegate to others, it imbues a unique character to the art, that allows it to speak to the viewer's heart without the need for subsequent explanation." JM Maron is also involved in transforming the environment of healthcare. "Healing and art work together well. As Hippocrates taught, it is important for the environment of healthcare to aid and assist those present. It can make a fundamental difference." JM AWARDs

Everett Shinn (1876 – 1953)
Everett Shinn, a realist artist associated with the Ashcan School and member of “The Eight” was born in New Jersey in 1876. After showing an aptitude for the arts as a child, at age 15, Shinn was enrolled at the Spring Garden Institute in Philadelphia. He quickly moved on to classes at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and by the age of 17, he was working as a staff artist for the Philadelphia Press. While working at the Press, Shinn befriended fellow artists William J. Glackens, George Luks, and John Sloan. This group, with Robert Henri and Joseph Laub, established the Charcoal Club, a social and intellectual sort of alternative art school.
In 1897, Shinn moved to New York City to work as an illustrator at the New York World. He became fascinated by the drama of the city. While visiting Europe in 1900, Shinn took interest in the work of the Impressionists, particularly those of Degas. Degas’ influence can be read in Shinn’s depictions of American theater. From his acquaintances in the theater world, Shinn began to paint decorative “rococo revivalist” murals in the homes of the wealthy elite. He also worked extensively in pastel, portraying the rough life of the city. In 1908, Shinn exhibited alongside his Charcoal Club associates, with the addition of Arthur B. Davies, Ernest Lawson, and Maurice Prendergast...

Provenance
Compass Rose, Chicago
Born Sylvan Irwin Goldberg in 1924 and raised in the Bronx, Michael Goldberg was an important figure in American Abstract Expressionism, who began taking art classes at the Art Students League in 1938. A gifted student, Goldberg finished high school at the age of 14 and enrolled in City College. He soon found New York’s jazz scene to be a more compelling environment, and he began skipping classes in favor of the Harlem jazz clubs near campus. Goldberg’s love of jazz would become a lifelong passion and a key component to his approach to composition in his paintings.
From 1940 to 1942, like many of the leading artists of the New York School, Goldberg studied with Hans Hofmann. In 1943, he put his pursuit of painting on hold and enlisted in the U.S. Army. Serving in North Africa, Burma, and India, Goldberg received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star before being discharged in 1946. After his service, he traveled and worked in Venezuela before returning to the United States, settling back in New York and resuming studies with Hofmann and at the Art Students League.
Living downtown and frequenting the Cedar Bar, Goldberg befriended many of the artists of the New York School. In 1951, his work was included in the groundbreaking Ninth Street Show, co-organized by Leo Castelli, Conrad Marca-Relli, and the Eighth Street Club, and featuring the work of - among others - Hofmann, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Franz Kline. In 1953, the Tibor de Nagy...
