Early 20th Century Mission San Juan Capistrano - Figurative Landscape
By Warren E. Rollins
Located in Soquel, CA
Stunning figurative landscape of the Mission San Juan Capistrano by Warren Eliphalet Rollins (American, 1861-1962). Presented in a giltwood frame. "Capistrano" lower right, unsigned. This is a study for a larger painting of the same scene. Image size, 14.5"H x 21"W.
For many years Warren Eliphalet Rollins was known as the "Dean of the Santa Fe art colony." He was the first artist to have a formal exhibition there; it was held in 1906 in the old Palace of the Governors. He was a close friend of Carlos Vierra, Gerald Cassidy, Kenneth Chapman, Sheldon Parsons and most of the other famous artists who assembled in the New Mexican capital during the first half of this century.
Born in Carson City, Nevada, Rollins was raised in California and attended the San Francisco School of Design where he studied under Virgil Williams. At the completion of his studies, he was awarded the Avery Gold Medal and made Assistant Director of the school. Following his marriage in 1887, he and his wife settled in San Diego, and it was during this period that Rollins became interested in the Indian as subject matter. In search of material, Rollins, his wife, and their two daughters, Ramona and Ruth, traveled through every Western state from the Mexican to the Canadian borders. While in Montana, Rollins painted a portrait of Calamity Jane...

American Impressionist: Springtime, a sunny path in France 19thC oil painting
By William Baptiste Baird
Located in Norwich, GB
This beautiful and light filled painting testifies of a new dawn: in the 1880s the landscape and animalier artist William Baird turns to Impressionism. Our Sunny Path, with looser brushwork and lighter colours, convey the fleeting nature of the present. Our lovely oil on canvas may well be homage to Claude Monet - according to Baird's inscription on the stretcher, it was painted in Mantes, which is only about 6 miles from Vétheuil, where Monet was living and working in the 1880s!
William Baptiste Baird was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1847, but as an adult moved to Paris to perfect his painting technique. In Paris, Baird studied under Adolphe Yvon...

Rutherford (John Rutherford) Boyd
1884 - 1951
Rutherford was born in Philadelphia and lived during his career in New York City, New Orleans where he was a sketch artist, and Leonia, New Jersey.
Beginning his career as an illustrator, Boyd Rutherford later became a painter, sculptor, designer and art educator.
He also wrote numerous articles about fine art, which were published in many periodicals.
He enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art under Thomas Anshutz.
After relocating to New York in 1905, he shortened his name to Rutherford Boyd and studied at the Art Students League
Memberships included the American Watercolor Society, and the Architecture League, and exhibition venues include the Art Institute of Chicago.
Painter, sculptor, watercolorist, draftsman and illustrator Rutherford Boyd made his living creating illustrations for magazines and exhibited his objective paintings and watercolors widely, but today is chiefly remembered for his abstract sculpture. Born John Rutherford Boyd in 1884 in Philadelphia, his father Peter K. Boyd (d. 1907) owned a woodworking shop that built furniture and architectural decorations. Boyd worked in his father’s shop until he entered Philadelphia’s Central Manual Training School in 1898. Granted a scholarship to the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) on graduation in 1901, Boyd first took evening classes at PAFA and in 1902 became a full-time student there. He took the conventional curriculum, studying under Thomas Anshutz (1851-1912) and Hugh Breckenridge (1870-1937). In 1903 Boyd left PAFA and moved to live with relations in Mount Vernon, N.Y. Two years later he moved to New York City, where he took an apartment with artist J. Scott...
