American, 1888-1970
John von Wicht John von Wicht (German American, 1888–1970) was known for his vibrant, geometric abstractions and later, more expressive compositions. Born in Malente, Germany, von Wicht began his art training at a young age, apprenticing in a painting and decorating shop and later studying lithography, stained glass, and mosaics at the Royal School of Fine and Applied Arts in Berlin. After World War I, he emigrated to the United States in 1923, where he initially worked in stained glass and mosaics. He settled in Brooklyn Heights, and quickly became involved in the American art scene. He exhibited with the American Abstract Artists group and in numerous solo shows in the 1940s, and gained some recognition. His work evolved from structured geometric abstractions to a freer, more emotive style, often inspired by the New York Harbor, where he served as a supply barge captain during World War II.to

Although renowned for his innovative and groundbreaking sculptures, Alexander Calder started his artistic career as an abstract painter, preferring to use gouache. What is gouache? Gouache is a water-soluble paint – a type of opaque watercolor.
As Calder returned to gouache painting towards the end of his life, he was now armed with a lifetime of experience as a sculptor. He explored the three-dimensional vocabulary of sculptural forms he had developed onto the two-dimensional surface of the paper. Certain shapes and colors recur throughout his gouaches and sculptures. Circles, ovals, and other geometric forms dominate the space. There is the same sense of energy and fluidity. The shapes do not sit on the surface but vibrate giving a feeling of movement in contrast to the static nature of painting.

"#71 – THEN IT'S HOPELESS?" is from Amy Williams' series A Farewell to Arms – wherein the artist is working directly onto page 71 of a found copy of Ernest Hemingway's WWII romance novel. The artist selects certain words and phrases from the page to isolate as a poem, and then draws, inks, redacts and paints the rest of the page according to the text of the poem. Here the poem reads: "Then it's hopeless? / But sometimes I cannot hope. / I cannot." Note the poem is outlined in dark red and purple radiating lines, while outside there are lighter violet, blue and white lines.
