Jon Blanchette Art
American, British, 1908-1987
Jon Blanchette was born in Somerset, England, in 1908. He immigrated to Battle Creek, Michigan, in 1918. Artistically inclined at age six, he later studied at the Pittsburgh Art Institute, where he received his BA. In 1932, Blanchette moved to Los Angeles, where he painted, did the architectural design, interior decorating and stage sets for Fox Studios. In 1948, he settled in Aptos, California, where he painted fine art and taught privately. During the summers of 1965–75, Blanchette held workshops in Mendocino. A romantic realist, he was primarily an oil painter but was also proficient with pen ink, watercolor, and silkscreen. Blanchette died in Aptos in 1987. He had a membership for the Santa Cruz Art League and Marin County Artists. Blanchette exhibited at Santa Cruz Women's Club, 1959, and stood first in the Santa Cruz County Art Competition, Aptos Art Center, 1965.

About the Painting
From a distance, Beckwith deftly captures the spectacle of a Hollywood premiere. But we have not been invited to the party. Our view is from the shadows of a less glamorous neighborhood with a shaggy, unkept palm tree and rundown buildings in the shadows. We look down through the darkness past a packed parking lot to the bright lights of two iconic Hollywood landmarks, the Pantages Theater and the Broadway Building. Completed in 1930, the Pantages was built as an exuberant Art Deco movie palace, while the Broadway Building housed an upscale department store which catered to entertainment industry elites who were less impacted by the Great Depression than the common man, since movies had become the mainstay of popular culture entertainment during the 1930s with large numbers of Americans looking to immerse themselves in Hollywood escapism. Here, in a rare Los Angeles urban image, Beckwith combines that Hollywood fantasy with the more sobering foreground images which could have been pulled from the L.A. Noire fiction of Raymond Chandler...

(William) Davenport Griffen was born in 1894 in Millbrook, NY. He graduated from Iowa State College in Ames, IA in 1918 with a B.S. in Civil Engineering; however, Griffen’s true love was painting. In 1919, he enrolled in the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and subsequently studied at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1923-1928. In 1926, he was awarded the American Travel Scholarship and began painting in Provincetown, MA. In 1928, he was awarded the John Quincy Adams Scholarship and spent six months painting in Paris, France. Griffen also painted in the U.S. Virgin Islands for 11 months between 1930-1931.
