Josef Hoffmann More Furniture and Collectibles

Austrian, 1870-1956

The Austrian architect Josef Hoffmann was a central figure in the evolution of modern design, and a leader in an aesthetic movement born in Europe in the late 19th century that rejected florid, extravagant ornamentation in favor of a new emphasis on simplicity of line.

As a founder of the Vienna Secession — a union of artists and designers determined to upend Austria’s artistic conservatism — and later, a founder of the turn-of-the-century Wiener Werkstätte (in English: the Viennese Workshops), a design cooperative that produced superbly crafted furniture and housewares, Hoffmann was a pioneering practitioner of what would become a fundamental principle of modernism: that good design is a way of life.

Hoffmann came of age amidst a shift in the culture of the applied arts, as a conservative order that looked only to the past for inspiration was pushed aside. But what, exactly, would replace that order was in question — and Hoffmann’s career embodies the developing patterns of design’s new spirit. His architectural work reflects his time as a student of the Vienna architect Otto Wagner, who disdained excessive decoration and employed new materials such as steel girders and reinforced concrete to create buildings with airy, open interiors full of light.

As a designer of furniture and interiors, Hoffmann was consistently open-minded about the aesthetics he explored. He was an early adherent of the flowing, organic forms of the Art Nouveau design movement that began to flourish in the late 1880s — but by the opening of the Wiener Werkstätte in 1903, Hoffmann’s designs embraced the beauty of geometry in pieces that feature grids and angular forms.

Hoffmann’s greatest works reflect his ability to combine seemingly conflicting design visions into coherent wholes. His architectural masterpiece, the Stoclet Palace in Brussels, has an exterior that groups together simple geometric forms and spacious interiors marked by subtly naturalistic design details that lend rooms an air of charm and geniality.

Hoffmann’s signature furniture design is an adjustable lounge chair — the Sitzmaschine (1905) — that marries a curving frame with square and rectangular back- and side rests. This piece, like so many others by Hoffmann, reflects a groundbreaking, forward-thinking appreciation for the union of different looks and sources that marks the best of interior design in our own day. Moreover, items offered on 1stDibs — which range from enameled silver jewelry, to silver flower vase baskets and other decorative objects, to sofas, lighting pendants and sconces — testify to the astonishing breadth of Hoffman’s creative pursuits. He was truly a giant of design.

Albert Oehlen Book
By Hans Werner Holzwarth
Located in Los Angeles, CA
The definitive monograph of Oehlen's work to date. Limited to 1,000 numbered copies, each signed by Albert Oehlen. Also available: An Art Edition limited to 100 copies, each signed by the artist and accompanied by an original artwork. Often wryly funny and just as smart, Albert Oehlen’s paintings play the medium for all it’s worth and then some. After realizing that the so-called death of painting freed him to explore "the number of aspects through which one could expand painting," Oehlen started work on a wide variety of figurative and non-objective offerings, in what he has called his "post-non-figurative" art. The artist continuously challenges himself, setting up rules that force him to overcome convention and his own routine in order to arrive at a satisfying image. During his career he has chosen to paint in primary colors only or in gray, to integrate mirrors into his canvases, or to start on computer paintings when the first PCs became available. In his most recent work Oehlen expands painting through the use of advertising posters whose in-your-face aesthetics he transforms with subtle brushwork. Never without a touch of tongue-in-cheek humour, his work seems to be winking at us as it dares us to change the way we perceive an image. This XL monograph covers the entire Scope of Oehlen’s oeuvre: Roberto Ohrt discusses the early years, when Oehlen came into his own alongside Kippenberger, Bu¨ttner, and others, part of a scene that broke rules in art and rock music. Klaus Kertess examines the years from 1988 onwards, when Oehlen saw himself more self-consciously as a painter and started his first abstract works, then continued to probe the limits of the medium. Martin Prinzhorn and John Corbett...

Josef Hoffmann Bieffeplast Umbrella Stand Art Deco Art Nouveau Wiener Werkstätt
By Josef Hoffmann
Located in London, GB
This modernist square umbrella stand of white powder-coated metal is a rare design Classic, from the renowned Josef Hoffmann for Bieffeplast. A square basket, with hundred of tiny square holes, is suspended from a white frame. At the base is a rich purple metal holder. This piece provides an crisp solution to umbrella storage, and is a must have for any design-conscious home. Josef Hoffmann was born in the Czech Republic in 1870, and would go on to be influential in the field of design, despite training as an architect. He and his Wiener Werkstätte were at the forefront of a new way of design: one of simple and sleek geometric lines. His love of small squares even earned Hoffmann the nickname Quadratl Hoffmann, or “Square Hoffmann”. He would go on to influence design powerhouses such as Le Corbusier, Alvar Aalto, and Gio Ponti. The Italian design company Bieffeplast won the rights to reproduce his work in the 1970s, and this particular piece was one of them. CREATOR: Josef Hoffmann PLACE OF ORIGIN: France DATE OF MANUFACTURE: c. late 1960s PERIOD: 1965 - 1975 MATERIALS & TECHNIQUES: Powder-coated metal CONDITION: Good original condition WEAR: Wear consistent with age and use.
