Juliette Steele Art

American, 1909-1980

Juliette Steele, an American artist, was an accomplished printmaker, painter and teacher. Steele was part of the Geometric Abstraction and Abstract Expressionism movements. Her peers included Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Hans Hofmann, Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline and Clyfford Still. Steele was born in 1909 in Union City, New Jersey. In the late 1920s, she moved to New York to study art and fashion design at the Traphagen School of Design. A decade later, she moved to San Francisco with her husband Edward Steele and earned a bachelor of arts degree from San Francisco State College. In the 1940s, Steele found inspiration from the new city and produced a series of lithographs depicting San Francisco landmarks. At the same time, she earned a master of fine arts from Stanford University and continued her studies at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco. Here, she studied with Ray Bertrand and Clay Spohn, followed closely by summer with Stanley William Hayter, from whom she learned the process of intaglio printmaking. Steele first exhibited with the San Francisco Art Association in 1945 and was represented by her lithograph, Fisherman’s Wharf, in the “Ninth Annual Exhibition of Drawings and Prints”. She exhibited in the annual exhibitions through 1948, her two abstract surrealist lithographs namely, Cyclonic Night and Fire Dance. Her first solo exhibition was mounted at the Artists Guild Gallery in San Francisco in 1947 and the following year an exhibition of her prints was featured at the Weyhe Gallery in New York. She was a member of the San Francisco Art Association, the San Francisco Society of Women Artists and the Laguna Beach Art Association. She also served as president of the San Francisco Society of Women Artists. Steele returned to her alma mater at the California School of Fine Arts, where she taught lithography and etching alongside other faculty such as Ansel Adams, Richard Diebenkorn and Clyfford Still. Her works can be found in the collection of the Laguna Art Museum, as well as in numerous publications, including Painting and Sculpture: The San Francisco Art Association in 1958, Who Was Who in American Art, 15641975 in 1999, Artists in California: 17861940 in 2002, Davenport’s Art Reference: The Gold Edition in 2005 and Emerging from the Shadows, Volume Four: A Survey Of Women Artists Working in California, 18601960 in 2015. Juliette Steele died in 1980 in California.

Geometric Abstraction Oil Painting on Masonite by Juliette Steele, Framed
By Juliette Steele
Located in Encino, CA
Untitled Geometric Abstraction, an original oil on masonite by Juliette Steele, is a piece for the true collector. Steele's use of color and patterns immediately captivates the viewer, reminding us of works by other pioneer abstractionists, such as Piet Mondrian and Wassily Kandinsky. Steele's puzzle-like, discontinuous sections draw you across and into the work. This masterful original artwork comes with a minimalist frame and would make a great addition to an art collection, enhancing most any home, and perfect for those who have an affinity for abstracts, contemporary paintings, and color-rich works of art. Abstract #18 , by Anthony Dyke, Oil Painting on Panel
Located in Oklahoma City, OK
This 11" x 14" oil on canvas painting is by Boston-based artist, Anthony Dyke. The painting is an example of geometric abstraction, composed through an arrangement of rectilinear forms, each rendered in bold, saturated color. Dominating the left side is a deep green vertical rectangle and adjacent to it is a narrow red vertical stripe, generating a visual dialogue between the broader green plane and the surrounding forms. A field of light blue occupies the top portion above. mid-composition, a horizontal mint green band stretches across the surface, and on top rests a tilted rectangular form shifting from white to warm red in a subtle gradient. To the far right, a tall blue vertical bar intersects with a fine yellow line. The base of the painting features a complex layering of darker hues: a black horizontal stripe, accompanied by stacked rectangles in red, purple, and yellow. Anthony Dyke was born in Norwich, Vermont and attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University earning a BFA and MFA in painting. As an artist and arts educator, he relocated from New York City to his downtown Oklahoma City studio, working there for two decades before returning to Boston in 2020. Coming from Vermont where the seasons are distinctly different from one another, his shift from a pastoral setting to an urban environment set up a dichotomy in the work, both visual and emotional. Tony has an extensive education in painting, photography, graphic design and figure sculpture. These mediums intersect in his work through many years of creating artworks and currently speak to his interest in abstract painting. During his senior year in the BFA Program at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, my large painting “Natole” was chosen by Frank Stella (the juror) into the highly competitive and prestigious Dana Pond...
