Leith Ridley Still-life Paintings

Mrs. Leith Ridley is a South African-born citizen of France, former film designer decorator, painter and portraitist living in Bulgaria. She paints almost exclusively on private commission. Her portraits in oil inspired by the Dutch and Italian Old Masters, as well in a large-format manner mostly in acrylics, in line with the more popular Contemporary and Pop styles, with a statement or observation to make or simply fun behind the conception, depending on the character of the subject. As well as an original style of large abstract landscape, a delicate and often dramatic play between space, transparency and texture, using either acrylic or oil, or both. Ridley’s artworks are owned in private and public collections worldwide.

Calvert’s current paintings investigate the relationship between digital media and the reception and perception of images, and utilizes diverse technologies such as fresco, 3D modeling, AI and data manipulation through code. She is especially interested in the evolution of pictorial space. Today we view our screens and the world they occupy as a shallowly layered space of overlapping desktop windows. The picture plane has tilted up again from the flatbed to float in front of our eyes. Calvert’s paintings in turn depict an intermediate space, where the verticality of the still life paintings cohabitate with these digital panes.
