Lev Smarcevscki Furniture
Ukrainian, Brazilian, 1924-2004
Lev Smarcevscki (1924-2004) was a Ukrainian-born architect who immigrated to Brazil at age three , settling in Salvador, Bahia, in 1942. Though he did not hold a formal university degree, he took non-degree courses in architecture and painting in Rio de Janeiro and worked as a draftsman. A pivotal 1948 trip to France proved transformative; he discovered the work of Le Corbusier, which had a "clear—and confessed—influence" on his shift to a modern architectural language.
Beginning in 1949, Smarcevscki partnered with Antônio Rebouças and Francisco Lemos de Santana in the firm "Engenharia, Arquitetura e Urbanismo Ltda.". This partnership designed several of Salvador's most significant modern residences between 1948 and 1952, introducing a new architectural vocabulary to the city. His work gained national recognition, with two of his homes exhibited at the I Bienal de São Paulo in 1951. Smarcevscki was also a key figure in Bahian modern furniture design, co-founding the Indústria de Móveis Ralf Ltda.
