Louis Comfort Tiffany Furniture

American, 1848-1933

Louis Comfort Tiffany was undoubtedly the most influential and accomplished American decorative artist in the decades that spanned the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Beyond glass, he worked in mediums that ranged from furniture and enameling to ceramics and metalware, with his Tiffany Studios producing highly collectible table lamps, vases, serveware and other objects.

The name Tiffany prompts thoughts of two things: splendid gifts in robin’s-egg blue boxes and exquisite stained glass. Charles Lewis Tiffany founded the former, and his son, Louis, is responsible for exemplars of the latter.

By the time Louis Comfort Tiffany was born, the stationery and “fancy goods” emporium his father had established 11 years before had grown to become the most fashionable jewelry and luxury items store in New York. Tiffany fils declined to join the family business and pursued a career as an artist. He studied painting with several teachers, notably the scenic painter Samuel Colman, while spending long periods touring Europe and North Africa. Though he painted his entire career, visits to continental churches sparked a passionate interest in stained glass. Tiffany began experimenting with the material and in 1875 opened a glass factory-cum-laboratory in Corona, Queens — the core of what eventually became Tiffany Studios, a multimedia decorative-arts manufactory.

Tiffany developed a method in which colors were blended together in the molten state. Recalling the Old English word fabrile, meaning “hand-wrought,” he named the blown glass Favrile, a term that signified handmade glass of unique quality. In his glass designs, Tiffany embraced the emerging Art Nouveau movement and its sinuous, naturalistic forms and motifs. The pieces won Tiffany international fame. (Siegfried Bing, the Paris entrepreneur whose design store, L’Art Nouveau, gave the stylistic movement its name, was the leading European importer of Tiffany pieces.)

By 1902, along with glass, Tiffany was designing stained-glass lamps and chandeliers as well as enameled metal vases, boxes and bowls, and items such as desk sets and candlesticks. Today such pieces epitomize the rich aesthetics of their era.

Antique Tiffany Studios table lamps are the most recognizable and the most prized. They range in price from $60,000 to upward of $2 million for intricate shade designs like the Dragonfly. Tiffany glass vases and bowls are generally priced from $1,000 to $30,000 depending on size, color, condition and form. Simpler accessories such as metal trays and small picture frames can fetch from $800 to $3,000. Tiffany design of any type is an emblem of taste and craftsmanship. As you will see on 1stDibs, Louis Comfort Tiffany ensured that each piece he and his company produced, magnificent or modest, was a work of art.

"Nasturtium, " Watercolor by Louis Comfort Tiffany for Stained Glass Window, 21
By Louis Comfort Tiffany
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Beautifully painted in vivid tones of yellow-orange, mossy green, warm red and deep blue -- echoing the rich tones of the stained glass he employed -- this rare and gorgeous watercolor by Louis Comfort Tiffany was clearly painted to inspire and guide the design of one of his stained glass windows featuring the nasturtium flower. In the earliest years of his career in the decorative arts, Tiffany served as the primary designer for his firm, inspired by ancient Byzantine and Roman glass as well as the bounty of American flowers and trees to be found in his native Northeast. As his business grew and it was necessary for him to oversee the work of many artists and artisans, he came to rely on others to develop most designs, such as Frederick Wilson for his figural church windows and Clara Driscoll...

Tiffany glass refers to the many and varied types of glass developed and produced from 1878 to 1933 at the Tiffany Studios in New York, by Louis Comfort Tiffany and a team of other designers, including Clara Driscoll, Agnes F. Northrop and Frederick Wilson. In 1865, Tiffany traveled to Europe, and in London he visited the Victoria and Albert Museum, whose extensive collection of Roman and Syrian glass made a deep impression on him. He admired the coloration of medieval glass and was convinced that the quality of contemporary glass could be improved upon. In his own words, the "Rich tones are due in part to the use of pot metal full of impurities, and in part to the uneven thickness of the glass, but still more because the glass maker of that day abstained from the use of paint". Tiffany was an interior designer, and in 1878 his interest turned toward the creation of stained glass, when he opened his own studio and glass foundry because he was unable to find the types of glass that he desired in interior decoration. His inventiveness both as a designer of windows and as a producer of the material with which to create them was to become renowned. Tiffany wanted the glass itself to transmit texture and rich colors and he developed a type of glass he called "Favrile". The glass was manufactured at the Tiffany factory...

Tiffany Studios New York 7-Piece "Pond Lily" Desk Set
By Louis Comfort Tiffany, Tiffany Studios
Located in New York, NY
Tiffany Studios’ Pond Lily Desk Set is a rare model, with only three extant sets known. The set is decorated with a dazzling array of lily pads, lily buds, dragonflies, and moths. The dragonfly and moth was a leitmotif of the Art Nouveau, but Louis Tiffany encountered the creatures and explored their form and significance throughout his childhood and artistic life, beginning as a youngster who sketched au plein air in the woods and wetlands surrounding his father’s summer house. At his Laurelton Hall estate, an artwork of nature coaxed into form over decades, Tiffany observed these insects in the teeming saltwater marshes and wetlands of Oyster Bay. The crown jewel of his Laurelton Hall garden was a water lily pond filled with varieties of colored water lilies, a novelty that debuted at the 1900 Exposition Universelle. Tiffany proceeded to make a series of designs based on the pond lily which he displayed to much acclaim in the 1902 Turin Prima Esposizione Internazionale d'Arte Decorativa Moderna. Product Details: Item #: T-21399 Artist: Tiffany Studios New York Country: United States Circa: 1905 Materials: Patinated Bronze Signed: blotter ends, inkstand, calendar frame, pen tray and rocker blotter each impressed "Tiffany Studios New York"; the inkstand, pen tray, rocker blotter and blotter ends further impressed with firm's respective model numbers Literature: Martin Eidelberg, Nina Gray and Margaret K. Pair of Tiffany Studios New York "Globe" Glass and Bronze Chandeliers
By Tiffany Studios, Louis Comfort Tiffany
Located in New York, NY
This enchanting pair of Tiffany Studios New York "hanging globe" chandeliers are composed of two reticulated glass shades. Tiffany’s idea of blowing glass through openwork bronze had evolved in the 1890s with a series of Byzantine revival fuel lamps. The technique was popularized by 19th-century Muranese Glassmakers Salvati as a derivation of the Ancient Roman cage cup (vasa diatreta). In the 4th century, Roman glassmakers encased blown glass vessels in a delicate cage of glass. In Tiffany’s version, glass is blown through an ogival pattern cage. Originating in 11th-century Byzantine textiles, the ogival pattern became established in Italy, Ottoman Turkey, North Africa, and as far west as the Balkans. Product Details: Item #: L-20851 Artist: Tiffany Studios New York Country: United States Circa: 1900 Dimensions: 7.5” length, 18" length (with chain) Materials: Favrile Glass, bronze Literature: A similar example is pictured in Tiffany Lamps and Metalware by Alastair Duncan, pg 290, illustration number 135. The difference between Tiffany glass and stained glass is that one relates to a brand and the other is a type of glass. Stained glass is colorful glass made by adding metallic oxides to molten glass during the blowing process. Named after Louis Comfort Tiffany who established Tiffany Studios, Tiffany glass involves a technique where copper foil, rather than the traditional lead oxide, serves as the joining material for individual stained glass pieces. Another key characteristic of Tiffany glass is that it often has an opalescent effect that creates variations in color and texture across its surface. On 1stDibs, shop a collection of Tiffany glass and other stained glass pieces.

Yes, Tiffany lamps and Tiffany jewelry are related. Tiffany Co. was established in Connecticut in 1837 by Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B. Young. Charles had launched the company’s famed catalogue, the Blue Book, and, with it, the firm’s signature robin’s-egg blue in 1845. In 1853, Tiffany and Young shifted their focus to fine jewelry. At the start of the Gilded Age, in 1870, Tiffany Co. opened its flagship store at 15 Union Square West in Manhattan. While Tiffany Co. gained renown all over the world for its designs for silver tableware, ceremonial silver and other objects, its jewelry was also a highly sought-after indicator of status and taste. Upon Charles’s death in 1902, his son Louis Comfort Tiffany took over artistic direction for the brand. Earlier, in 1885, Louis had founded the Tiffany Glass Company, a glassmaking firm, that began producing the lamps commercially in 1895. It evolved into Tiffany Studios in 1902. Louis brought his decorative eye inspired by nature to the Tiffany stained-glass lamps as well as organic jewelry designs.
