Louis Vidal, Vidal the blind or Vidal-Navatel is a French sculptor born on December 6, 1831 in Nîmes and who passed on May 9th, 1892 in the 12th district of Paris. Born to an unknown father and Sophie Vidal-Navatel, he grew up in a family of artists, having for stepfather the painter Alexandre Colin who married his mother in second marriage and for half-brother Paul-Alfred Colin. He studied anatomy but became blind around 1853, which prevented him from pursuing this path. He studied with the animal sculptors Antoine-Louis Barye and Pierre Louis Rouillard and became an animal sculptor himself by replacing sight with touch. This faculty enabled him to create portraits, he perceived the shape of faces by touching them and sculpted them in clay, and remains known as the author of a sculpture representing a roaring lion, as well as that of a bull in bronze, donated by the State to the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nîmes in 1867. Louis Vidal worked in particular with Alfred Barye, son of his master Antoine-Louis Barye. He became a professor of modeling in 1888 at the École Braille in Paris. A portrait of the artist taken by the photographer Étienne Carjat...

Antique Bronze Lion Sculpture 19th Century Brown Patinated Roaring Lion Statue
Located in Wembley, GB
Antique 19th Century Bronze Lion Sculpture, Naturalist Animalier Style A powerful and finely cast antique bronze sculpture of a lion, dating to the 19th century, embodying the majesty and strength of the king of beasts. The lion is captured in a dynamic stride, with muscles tensed and mouth open in a fierce roar, a masterful portrayal of motion and authority. Executed in dark brown patinated bronze, this piece demonstrates superb craftsmanship and anatomical precision, reflecting the European Animalier tradition that flourished in the 19th century. The deeply chased mane, sinewy body, and expressive face reveal both artistic sensitivity and technical mastery. The lion’s curved tail and forward stance lend a sense of fluid energy and balance. At 31 cm in length, this sculpture commands attention without overwhelming the space — ideal for a mantel, study, or collector’s cabinet. Its naturalistic detailing and rich patina make it a timeless statement of power, courage, and refinement. In very good antique condition, with gentle age patina and no visible repairs or losses. Key Details Material: Bronze with dark brown patina Style/Period: 19th Century European Naturalist / Animalier Subject: Lion, striding and roaring Dimensions: Length 31 cm (approx.) Condition: Very good, with natural age patina Use: Collector’s display, interior décor, fine art sculpture This sculpture exemplifies the grandeur of 19th-century Animalier art, when bronze lions symbolized power, bravery, and imperial dignity. A work of both artistry and strength, it enriches any setting - from classic interiors to contemporary design - with timeless elegance. Louis Vidal Figure of Walking Lion, French Animalier, 1870s, France
By Louis Vidal
Located in Biebergemund, Hessen
A huge 19th century plaster Louis Vidal striding lion most probably finished and founded by Antoine Louis Barye. Louis Vidal was born in Nimes, France on December 6, 1831, Louis Vidal-Natavel pursued a successful career in sculpture in Paris despite a childhood eye disease that eventually took his sight; he signed many of his works Vidal aveugle (Vidal the Blind). A student of the sculptor Antoine Louis Barye and a menthe of Rouillard, Vidal exhibited his work at the Paris Exposition of 1855 and then at the Paris Salon from 1859 until 1882. Although he was completely blind, Vidal was a remarkable sculptor. His production was limited, and only a few of his plaster models were cast in bronze editions. In 1888 Vidal became the professor of modeling at the L'Ecole Braille in Paris. Walking Lion...
