Italian, 1892-1963
Luigi Bartolini was an Italian painter, writer and poet. He is best known for his novel, Bicycle Thieves, upon which the Italian neorealist film of the same title, directed by Vittorio De Sica, was based. He published more than 70 books during his lifetime.

Through his etchings, which often accompany his writings, the artist led a research on light and on the signs of expressionist intonation. Among the literary works: Ladri di Biciclette (1946); Il mezzano Alipio (1951); Racconti Scabrosi (1963). Only after World War I, he dedicated himself entirely to engraving, achieving his first success in 1932 at the Italian engraving exhibition in Florence...

While we do not see the fan's letter that prompted this response from Johns, it's not too difficult to guess, as Jasper Johns replies, stating, in part, "I wish I felt I could advise you but I can't. One either jumps in the water or doesn't. There doesn't seem to be any in-between." No truer words could have been spoken regarding the artist's life.
