Max Thalmann Furniture

1890-1944

Max Thalmann was a German Expressionist artist known for his drawings and woodcut prints. From 1912–33, he achieved recognition as a printmaker producing three highly regarded modernist portfolios in woodcut Cathedral, Passion and America. The America suite was inspired by a visit to his brother in Chicago, and to New York City, in 1923. During the 1930s, Thalmann's interests moved from woodcuts to drawings, watercolors and pastels. He also designed books for the Eugen Dieterich publishing house in Jena, Germany. Thalmann died in that city shortly before the end of World War II.
