Michael Halsband Prints and Multiples
American, b. 1956
Born and raised in New York City, Michael Halsband discovered photography at the mere age of 10. He received a B.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts in 1980 and began making portraits of artists and musicians, including his most known and iconic portrait of Andy Warhol
Jean-Michel Basquiat with boxing gloves. His early projects included six months as the tour photographer for The Rolling Stones on their 1981 “Tattoo You” tour, as well as a six-year project documenting the School of American Ballet. In 2005, Michael published “Surf Book,” a collection of his portraits of legendary surfers, and the culmination of a five-year project. He has exhibited worldwide. Some of Halsband's recent solo exhibitions include, “Halsband Portraits,” in April 2015 at the National Arts Club, Grand Gallery in New York City, and a larger retrospective also titled “Halsband Portraits,” at the Southampton Arts Center, NY, in November 2017. Michael published his second book, “Halsband Portraits,” as an accompaniment to the National Arts Club exhibition.to

Offset lithograph poster

This rare vintage poster was published by Christo and Jeanne-Claude to promote and raise funds for Christo's famous Umbrellas Japan-USA project in the early 1990s. This work was acquired from the Estate of Jacob and Aviva Baal-Teshuva, collectors, curators, authors, early supporters and good friends of Christo. Authenticity unconditionally guaranteed.
ABOUT THE UMBRELLAS JAPAN-USA PROJECT:
At sunrise, on October 9, 1991, Christo and Jeanne-Claude's 1,880 workers began to open the 3,100 umbrellas in Ibaraki and California, in the presence of the artists at both sites. This Japan-USA temporary work of art reflected the similarities and differences in the ways of life and the use of the land in two inland valleys, one 12 miles (19 kilometers) long in Japan, and the other 18 miles (29 kilometers) long in the USA.
In Japan, the valley is located north of Hitachiota and south of Satomi, 75 miles (120 kilometers) north of Tokyo, around Route 349 and the Sato River, in the Prefecture of Ibaraki, on the properties of 459 private landowners and governmental agencies. In the USA, the valley is located 60 miles (96.5 kilometers) north of Los Angeles, along Interstate 5...

During the 1960s, Dennis Hopper (1936–2010) carried a camera everywhere—on film sets and locations, at parties, in diners, bars and galleries, driving on freeways, and walking in political marches. He photographed movie idols, pop stars, writers, artists, girlfriends, and complete strangers. Along the way he captured some of the most intriguing moments of his generation with a keen and intuitive eye. From a selection of photographs compiled by Hopper and gallerist Tony Shafrazi—more than a third of them previously unpublished—this Collector’s Edition distills the essence of Hopper’s prodigious photographic career, documenting the likes of Tina Turner in the studio, Andy Warhol at his first West Coast show, Paul Newman on set, and Martin Luther King Jr. during the Civil Rights March from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama.
In many ways this work is photography as film, a poignant narrative expressed through a series of stark images—early shots of Tijuana bullfights, LA happenings, and urban street scenes show an experimental freedom that would translate into the vivid cinematic imagery of Easy Rider and beyond.
The images are accompanied by introductory essays from Tony Shafrazi and legendary West Coast art pioneer Walter Hopps, as well as an extensive biography by journalist Jessica Hundley. With excerpts from Victor Bockris’s interviews of Hopper’s famous subjects, friends, and family, this is an unprecedented exploration of the life and mind of one of America’s most fascinating personalities.
CONTRIBUTORS
The photographer
Dennis Hopper (1936–2010) was an acclaimed artist, actor, screenwriter, and director who first impressed audiences with his performances in Rebel Without A Cause (1955) and Giant (1956). He changed the face of American cinema with Easy Rider (1969), which he cowrote, directed, and starred in. Hopper went on to act in hundreds of memorable films and television shows, including Apocalypse Now (1979), Blue Velvet (1986), Hoosiers (1986), True Romance (1993), Basquiat (1997), Elegy (2008), and the TV series Crash (2008). Hopper began painting as a child and started taking photos in 1961, after his then wife Brooke Hayward gave him a 35 mm Nikon camera for his birthday. His paintings and photography have been exhibited all over the world, including the recent retrospective, “Dennis Hopper and the New Hollywood” in Paris. Dennis Hopper passed away May 29, 2010, in Venice, CA.
The contributing authors

Walter Hopps (1933–2005) was one of the premier curators of 20th-century art. Cofounder of Los Angeles’s Ferus Gallery and director of the Pasadena Museum of Art, he was responsible for the first retrospectives of Kurt Schwitters, Joseph Cornell, and Marcel Duchamp. A key advocate of American Pop art, his 1962 survey “New Painting of Common Objects” was the first of its kind. After directing the Washington Gallery of Modern Art, he went on to build the Menil Collection museum in Houston and became its founding director in 1987.
A filmmaker and frequently published art, music, and film journalist, Jessica Hundley has directed several documentaries and recently completed her second book, a biography of country-rock legend Gram Parsons...

History:
Tony Shafrazi, November 2015: "My good friend, the Swiss gallerist Bruno Bischofberger, had worked with Andy Warhol since the mid 1960s. He got to know Jean-Michel’s paintings and started working with him in 1982 or ’83. There had been a suggestion of a collaboration between Warhol, Basquiat, and Francesco Clemente. Then, Jean-Michel and Andy, very enthusiastically and seriously, went on to undertake a whole processes of painting collaboratively at Warhol’s Factory for a year to a year and half, making somewhere between 70 and 80 large paintings that represented an extraordinary—and very rare in history—body of work.
Their joint body of work represented a whole year and half of collaboration and production. It was not an overnight thing. The two artists worked together, one painting over the other, back and forth, and I immediately thought of two people sparring and boxing together, which is how I hit upon the idea of a boxing theme for the show’s advertisement."
