Michelle Dunaway Figurative Paintings

Michelle Dunaway is an American artist known for her bold brushwork and sensitive portrayals of emotion that illuminate the human experience. Drawn to the human form from a young age, she has maintained a lifelong fascination with portraiture. Her artwork has appeared in international exhibitions and leading publications such as Fine Art Connoisseur, Art of the West, International Artist, American Art Collector, Southwest Art, and American Artist.

Dunaway has received numerous awards, including Finalist and Award of Exceptional Merit at the Portrait Society of America’s International Portrait Competition in 2010 and 2016, a Certificate of Excellence from the Portrait Society in 2014 and 2017, and Finalist recognition in the Art Renewal Center’s ARC Salon. She was also a featured invited artist at the 2014 California Art Club Gold Medal Exhibition.

Though she paints a range of subjects, Dunaway’s primary passion remains portraiture. After studying anatomy and drawing at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, she continued her training through workshops with Jeremy Lipking and Morgan Weistling, both of whom became close friends and early supporters. At one of Lipking’s first workshops, he and his wife purchased a painting Dunaway brought for critique and helped introduce her to a Beverly Hills gallery, launching her gallery career.

Dunaway spent several years in California painting from life and exhibiting in Los Angeles and Laguna Beach while completing private portrait commissions. In 2009 she returned to New Mexico, settling into a studio overlooking the Sandia Mountains and joining a respected Santa Fe gallery. While preparing work for exhibitions, she continued entering competitions. Her still life Mucha and Peonies won Best of Show in an online competition, and her portrait of two sisters was selected as one of sixteen finalists, out of 1,300 entries. for the Portrait Society of America’s International Portrait Competition. Exhibited in Washington, D.C., the piece earned an award and drew the attention of renowned artist Richard Schmid, who invited her to paint with him and Nancy Guzik in Vermont. Their resulting friendship has influenced her artistic growth; Schmid has praised her as “a force in this movement toward excellence in painting.

Dunaway frequently receives invitations to give demonstrations, lectures, and workshops internationally, attracting artists from around the world. She believes deeply in “passing on the torch” of artistic knowledge and makes time to teach despite a demanding exhibition schedule. For her, creating great art means “putting light into the world”, capturing luminosity on canvas and sharing wisdom with other artists. A particularly meaningful affirmation came in 2015 when Richard Ormond, John Singer Sargent’s grandnephew, told her after a main-stage demonstration that watching her paint eased his lifelong concerns about preserving Sargent’s legacy. Dunaway’s work is exhibited in galleries across the United States and is highly sought after by collectors for its timeless quality and ability to capture the essence of the individual. Her paintings are held in private collections throughout North America and Europe.

Artist: Michelle Dunaway
Winter Morning
By Michelle Dunaway
Located in Pasadena, CA
Provenance Acquired by the gallery directly from the artist Signed "Dunaway" on lower left Artist Statement “I often will go on painting trips with other artists to remote locations to do plein air sketches and gather reference for larger studio paintings. This was painted from a winter painting trip to Montana, where about ten of us gathered together at a cabin in February to paint landscapes and portraits in the snow. The morning when I saw this scene, we were all heading out into the fresh snow to go paint landscape—my artist friend was standing just outside the door of the cabin in this pose, contemplating the day ahead and looking like a painting himself! The early morning sky was white, as fresh snow was falling all around, blanketing the landscape and tree behind him. I knew this was a moment I had to capture in paint—an artist immersed in reflective thought on a winter morning.” —Michelle Dunaway...

Halmstad Harbour Seen From the North, 1889
Located in Stockholm, SE
The painting "Halmstad Harbour Seen From the North" by Oscar Ohlson is a captivating snapshot of daily life and historical architecture, frozen in time from the year 1889. With a meticulous eye for detail, Ohlson has rendered approximately 25 boats in the harbor, each brimming with the quiet bustle of daily chores. The painting invites viewers to step into a moment where people converse, work, and seek respite from the sun under shared umbrellas, while wisps of smoke subtly rise from several boats, suggesting the presence of life and activity beyond the canvas. In this vibrant scene, a man carries a sack, perhaps fresh merchandise from one of the docked vessels, while others engage in conversation, highlighting the social tapestry of the harbor. Ohlson's masterful use of light reflects on the water, creating a shimmering path that leads the eye to the majestic Halmstad Castle, which adorns the right side of the painting. This historic building, beautifully situated by the Nissan river and not far from the sea, is a testament to Halmstad's past as a Danish territory. Constructed in the early 17th century during the reign of King Christian IV, the castle stands as a reminder of the town's rich history and cultural heritage. The first building to the right, once part of this historic tableau, has been removed to accommodate modern necessities, replaced by a road that now runs through its former site. This juxtaposition of past and present is a poignant commentary on the evolution of cities and the sacrifices made in the name of progress. Halmstad itself, a town that straddles the Nissan river, retains much of its early 20th-century character in its city core. Low brick and half-timbered houses, some dating back to the 17th century, dot the landscape. The town center on the west side of Nissan is bordered by remnants of early 17th-century fortifications, including the 1600s castle, Norre Port from 1601, and King Charles XI's path along the old fortress wall. At the heart of the town is Stora Torg with Carl Milles' Europa and the Bull fountain from 1926, and the town hall built in 1938. The city layout, influenced by Renaissance planning, converges at Stora Torg, which is also home to the town's sole medieval building, the brick hall church of St. Nikolai from the 14th century. Oscar Ohlson (1847-1912), a native of Linneryd, Småland, was a multifaceted individual. Beginning his career with a legal degree from Uppsala University in 1870, Ohlson's passion for the arts led him to pursue music studies before dedicating himself to art under the guidance of Alfred Wahlberg...

In 1860, when he was only 16 years old, he sold his work Little Philosophy for 2,000 reais at the Seville Exhibition. In 1867 he traveled to Madrid, where he entered Federico Madrazo's studio. There he established friendship with painters Eduardo Rosales and Fortuny. He went regularly to the Prado where he copied Velázquez, from whom he acquired spontaneity and the use of color for his technique. Finally, and out of admiration for Fortuny's orientalist painting, he returned to Seville and organized an excursion to Morocco. At the end of 1868 he decided to travel to Rome accompanied by the painters Rafael Peralta and Luis Jiménez Aranda...
