Mr. (Iwamoto Masakatu), born in Cupa in 1969, is a Japanese painter associated with the “Superflat” movement pioneered by Takashi Murakami. Mr.’s work similarly employs the visual language of otaku, the Japanese subculture centered on adolescence, manga, anime, and video games. Mr. employs a wide range of media, including painting, sculpture, and video and often portrays young girls as hypersexual, “lolicon” figures in his work, a convention commonly employed in anime.
Mr. has exhibited in solo and group shows at major museums and galleries worldwide, among others Fondation Cartier pour l'Art Contemporain and Musée d'Art Contemporain de Lyon in France; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Japan Society, New York and the Seattle Art Museum in the United States.to
