Island Small Pouf in Capri Grey Upholstery
Brass Base by Serena Confalonieri
By Serena Confalonieri
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Island is a collection made up of three poufs with organic forms that evoke the coast line lapped by the sea. This imagery is felt throughout the entire design, conjuring the enveloping movement of the tide which softens and shapes the shore. For this reason, the volumes are perceived differently depending on the perspective from which they are observed in a space. The base visually elevates the seat from the ground making it seem like it’s floating in space.
Serena is an indipendent designer and art director based in Milano. She works on product, graphic and textile design projects and collaborates with many italian and international companies. Her works are placed in-between product and graphic design: an accurate research on the surfaces is always present in her projects. After a Master Degree in Interior Design, she started her career working in many architecture and design practices in Milano, Barcelona and Berlin, and collaborating with the Interior Design Faculty of Politecnico di Milano as assistant professor. In 2013 she makes her debut at Milano Design Week with her Flamingo rug...

Bas Van Pelt Patinated Tubular Armchair in Metal and Sisal
By Bas Van Pelt
Located in Waalwijk, NL
Bas van Pelt, armchair, metal, sisal, The Netherlands, 1930s.
This original comfortable chair is designed by the Dutch interior and furniture designer Bas van Pelt (1900-1945) and was manufactured by E.M.S. Overschie. The construction of this particular chair is made of chromed tubular metal frames, giving it a sleek appearance. But then the seat and armrests have a warm appearance due to the coarsely woven fabric ‘sisal’. The design shows traits of the aesthetics by Bauhaus. The seat has discoloration and the metal shows signs of use, which contribute to the authentic look.
Bastiaan Johannes van Pelt (1900-1945) was a Dutch furniture designer and interior designer. As son of a book printer, he spend his time after school working in several printing companies in Holland. At that time he already engaged in topics like designing furniture, interiors, carpets and fabrics, graphic work and pottery. In 1927, he quit his old job and started to work at a furniture factory owned by his father-in-law J.C. Jansen in Overschie. Together with his brother-in-law, Jan Jansen...
