Odiot Sterling Silver

Founded in 1690 by silversmith Jean-Baptiste Gaspard Odiot, the house of Odiot became quickly known as one of the best gold and silver workshops in France, specializing in decorative objects and cutlery.

The company found early favor from the court of reigning French king Louis XV, which laid the groundwork for later success. Odiot achieved even more prominence under the leadership of Jean-Baptiste Gaspard’s grandson, Jean-Baptiste Claude Odiot, who took over the family business as a master in 1785. Odiot landed high-profile commissions by Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, which translated into additional commissions by other royal families across Europe.

In 1827, Jean-Baptiste Claude handed the company to his son, Charles Nicolas Odiot, who would serve as the official supplier to King Louis-Philippe I and the Orléans royal family. Charles Nicolas specialized in Rococo-style silverware. The next-generation Odiot master, Jean-Baptiste Gustave Odiot, became the official supplier of silver to the czar of Russia and managed the house’s largest order to date: a 3,000-piece set of solid-gold dinnerware for Sa’id Pasha, the viceroy of Egypt.

Today, Odiot continues to produce exemplary silver and gold wares, from decorative objects to flatware, upholding the fine standards of the centuries-old brand. Odiot works can be found in museum collections around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Louvre in Paris.

Odiot - 4pc. 19th Century 950 Sterling Silver Louis XVI Gravy Boat, Noble Crest
By Odiot
Located in Wilmington, DE
Direct from Paris, A Magnificent 4 pc. 19th Century 950 Sterling Silver Louis XVI Gravy Boat with Presentation Platter and Two Sterling Silver Inserts and Noble Crest by the World's Premier French Silversmith Jean-Baptiste Odiot, Absolutely Stunning - circa late 1800s. Jean-Baptiste Claude Odiot, an illustrious French silversmith, significantly influenced the decorative arts in Europe during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. His remarkable craftsmanship, innovative designs, and the opulence of his creations earned him an esteemed place amongst the royal and aristocratic patrons of his time. Born in 1763 in Paris, Jean-Baptiste Claude Odiot was destined to be a silversmith, a craft that ran in his family. He apprenticed under his grandfather, Jean-Baptiste Gaspard Odiot, and later under the renowned silversmith Jean-Baptiste-Claude Roettiers. This training period was crucial as it grounded him in the traditional techniques of the trade while also exposing him to the evolving tastes of the French aristocracy, preparing him for a successful career. Odiot's work was marked by meticulous attention to detail and a robust embrace of the neoclassical style, which became prevalent in the late 18th century. His ability to blend artistic beauty with functional design set his pieces apart. Odiot introduced a range of innovative techniques in silverwork, including his use of the repoussé method to create intricate raised patterns, and chasing, to refine and detail these designs. His mastery over silver casting and gilding also allowed him to produce pieces with exceptional quality and durability, making them highly prized collectibles. The prestige of Jean-Baptiste Odiot was significantly enhanced by his association with European royalty. His rise to fame coincided with the period of Napoleon Bonaparte, who was an avid patron of the arts. Odiot received substantial commissions from the imperial family, including a famous 179-piece dinner service for Napoleon’s wedding to Marie-Louise of Austria in 1810. This patronage not only secured Odiot's financial success but also established his reputation as a purveyor of luxury goods suitable for the highest echelons of society. Recognition of Odiot's talent came not only from his royal and aristocratic patrons but also from various artistic institutions. He was awarded the Legion of Honour by Napoleon, a testament to his influence and status in the arts. Moreover, Odiot's participation in exhibitions, such as the Exposition des Produits de l'Industrie Française, garnered him critical acclaim, enhancing his stature and legacy in the decorative arts. Among Odiot's diverse oeuvre, his sterling silver gravy servers...

Odiot - Antique French 950 Sterling Silver Candy Serving Dish, 1880s
By Odiot
Located in Wilmington, DE
Direct from a Chateaux in the South of France, A Magnificent 19th Century 950 Sterling Silver Candy "bonbon" Dish by the World's Premier French Silversmith Jean-Baptiste Odiot, An Ultra Luxurious Addition to any Stately Home, Absolutely Magnificent, - circa late 1800s. Jean-Baptiste Odiot stands as one of the most distinguished silversmiths in French history, renowned for his exceptional craftsmanship and significant contributions to the art of silver-smithing. His workshop not only provided services to the aristocracy of Europe but also greatly influenced the styles and standards of silverware in the 19th century. Born in Paris, Jean-Baptiste Odiot was destined to become a central figure in French decorative arts. After apprenticing under his grandfather, Jean-Baptiste Gaspard Odiot, he took over the family business in the late 18th century. His rise coincided with a turbulent period in French history, yet he managed to establish a flourishing enterprise. Odiot's workshop quickly became one of the most prestigious in Paris, attracting a clientele that included nobility and later, during the Napoleonic era, the imperial family itself. His ability to blend artistic excellence with innovative techniques marked a new era in silver-smithing. Odiot was known for his mastery of high-relief repoussé, chasing, and gilding, which allowed him to create pieces of remarkable detail and opulence. His work often featured motifs inspired by classical antiquity, aligning with the Empire style popularized during Napoleon's reign. His innovative approach to silver-smithing included the adoption of new techniques that enhanced the efficiency and aesthetic appeal of his products. His introduction of a mechanical rolling process allowed for more precise manipulation of silver, resulting in finer and more consistent products. Odiot's craftsmanship was recognized at several important exhibitions. His works were showcased at the Exposition des produits de l'industrie française, where he consistently won medals, including gold medals in 1806 and 1823. These accolades not only affirmed his mastery but also solidified his reputation across Europe. His contributions to the field were also recognized by his election to the Légion d’Honneur in 1825, an honor that acknowledged both his artistic talent and his impact on the French industry. Odiot's most significant patron was Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, who commissioned numerous pieces, including the spectacular cradle for the King of Rome, Napoleon’s son...

Rocaille, in Western architecture and decorative arts, 18th-century style featuring elaborately stylized shell-like, rocklike, and scroll motifs. Rocaille is one of the more prominent aspects of the Rococo style of architecture and decoration that developed in France during the reign of King Louis XV (1715–1774). The Rocaille style has been defined as a reaction both to the Classic rigidity of the waning Baroque style and to the new interest in nature and the natural sciences. In French, rocaille means “rubble,” or “pebbles,” and style rocaille is synonymous with Rococo. Rocaille is most often found in small pieces of furniture and household articles, especially in such personal items as snuffboxes and hand mirrors. In wall decorations of wood or plaster, rocaille features shells, pebbles, and scrolls as well as flower, fern, and coral forms, all emphasizing brief, asymmetric single or double curves. Originally the term was confined to the fanciful pierced shellwork of artificial grottoes in late Renaissance gardens. Odiot Founded in 1690, the House of Odiot gained notoriety during the reign of Louis XV with Jean-Baptiste Gaspard Odiot, one of the finest silversmiths of his time. Napoleon and the splendor of Empire period marked the beginning of a glorious chapter for the House of Odiot. The virtuosity of Odiot’s creations at this time, heavily influenced by the return of the antique style, and the frequent use of silver-gilt, unquestionably place them amongst the best examples of French silverware. Odiot’s reputation spread far beyond the borders of the Empire to all the Courts of Europe. Charles Nicolas Odiot excelled in the revived rocaille style, and experimented with many new techniques, such as electroplating, which he brought back from England in 1824. He inherited the direction of Odiot in 1825 and was purveyor of silverware by appointment to His Majesty the King Louis-Philippe and to the Royal Family of Orleans. Charles Nicolas was succeeded by his son Gustave who received the most largest order ever placed with the House of Odiot: 3,000 pieces of solid gold flatware...
