Ossip Zadkine Figurative Prints

Ossip Zadkine was a relentless, unclassifiable and prolific artist. Today, we can count more than 612 sculptures and a large number of works on paper; 765 gouaches and drawings, as well as 200 lithographs and etchings. The exhibition of his works in his Parisian studio of the rue Rousselet on May 20th, 1920, marked the beginning of a long series of shows, including more than 105 solo exhibitions during his lifetime in Europe; but also, in the United States and in Japan. Truly, a man of the world, Zadkine lived in Vitebsk, Belarus, Sunderland and London in England and Paris, Bruniquel, Les Arques in France. During the First World War, he enlisted voluntarily and was posted to the Russian ambulance corps in Champagne in 1916. During the Second World War, he fled to New York City and lived there from October 1941 to September 1945. Zadkine also traveled to many places including Belgium, the Netherlands, Greece, Italy, Japan, America, amongst others. Zadkine collaborated with many people on diverse occasions. He collaborated with architects such as Adrien Blomme, Joseph André and Hugh Maaskant; decorators such as Marc du Plantier and André Groult; poets such as Claude Aveline, Robert Ganzo, Pierre Béarn and others.  Zadkine was close to such important individuals as artists (Marc Chagall, Henry Moore, Tsuguharu Foujita, Amedeo Modigliani and others; thinkers, founders, collectors, doctors, industrialists, businessmen worldwide. He gathered his memoirs in his book, Le Maillet et le Ciseau, which he started writing in 1962.

His mother Sophie Lester descended from Scots, who emigrated at the time of Peter the Great. 1905 His parents send him to Sunderland, in the North of England, where his mother’s family lives. He studies English and attends modelling courses at the local Art School. 1905-1909 He travels to London without his parents permission where he attends courses at the Regent Street Polytechnicum. In order to earn his living, he plans to work with a stonecutter. He visits the British Museum and studies classical sculpture there. Returns to Smolensk where he produces his first sculpture. Goes back to London. 1909-1910 Zadkine settles in Paris and studies in the ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts. Finds a workshop in a building called La Ruche, in the XVe arrondissement. 1911 Zadkine presents statues and drawings at the annual Salon d’Automne and at the Salon des Indépendants. It is the ‘cubists’ who draw his attention in Paris. Is essentially close to Russian students who get together in a cafe of the ‘Quartier Latin’. Has himself called Joe Zadkine until 1914. 1912-1913 Finds a room in the neighbourhood of Montparnasse, in the rue de Vaugirard. Studies Roman sculpture. Produces drawings and watercolours dealing with war. Zadkine is discharged in 1917. He says he is ‘bodily and spiritually’ ruined by the war. Basquiat at Vrej Baghoomian gallery 1989 (Basquiat Red Warrior announcement)
By Jean-Michel Basquiat
Located in NEW YORK, NY
Basquiat: Vrej Baghoomian gallery New York, 1989: Vintage original folding announcement card to Jean-Michel Basquiat at Vrej Baghoomian Gallery New York: 10/21 to 11/25, 1989. Pictured on front side is an image of Basquiat's iconic, 'Red Warrior.' A rare, highly collectible Basquiat ephemera piece that works well in any collection. Off-set printed gallery announcement. 8.75 x 5.75 inches (folded closed). Light signs of handling; otherwise very good overall vintage condition. Published by Vrej Baghoomian Gallery, New York, 1989. Unsigned from an edition of unknown. Scarce. Jean-Michel Basquiat rose to success during the 1980s. Basquiat’s paintings are largely responsible for elevating graffiti artists into the realm of the New York gallery scene. His spray-painted crowns and scribbled words referenced everything from his Haitian and Puerto Rican heritage, to political issues, pop-culture icons, and Biblical verse. The gestural marks and expressive nature of his work not only aligned him with the street art of Keith Haring and Kenny Scharf, but also the Neo-Expressionists Julian Schnabel and David Salle. “If you wanna talk about influence, man, then you've got to realize that influence is not influence,” he said of his process. After quickly rising to fame in the early 1980s, Basquiat was befriended by many celebrities and artists, including Andy Warhol, with whom he made several collaborative works. At only 27, his troubles with fame and drug addiction led to his tragic death from a heroin overdose on August 12, 1988 in New York, NY. The Whitney Museum of American Art held the artist’s first retrospective from October 1992 to February 1993. Related Categories: Basquiat Tony Shafrazi. Basquiat ephemera. Basquiat poster. Study for a Monument in the Heroic/Erotic/Academic/Comic Style Claes Oldenburg
By Claes Oldenburg
Located in New York, NY
This sensuous and playful scene is characteristic of Oldenburg’s printmaking ouevre: a veritable heap of women displaying various expressions of ecstasy and repose. The loose sketches were drawn directly onto the plate by the artist, a master draftsman whose erotic etchings are largely unknown. The composition is based on the drawing: Clinical Study, Towards a Heroic-Erotic Monument in the Academic/Comic Style, 1965, ball-point pen on paper, 20 x 40 in. / 60 x 101.6 cm. *This print was etched in six gorgeous inks, each in an edition of ten: take your pick of color!* Oldenburg had an interest in imaginary monuments: he famously conceptualized works such as “Ball”, an unbuilt monument conceived of in 1967 which imagined two ballcocks – the round mechanism in a toilet tank...
