Paine Furniture closed in 2000. Leonard Baker Shearer originally founded the company as a simple cabinet-making workshop in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1835, and then took on John S. Paine as his apprentice in 1845. After Shearer died in 1867, Paine shifted the focus of the workshop to manufacturing furniture and named his operation Paine's Furniture Company.
