“Miss Trigѐre’s designs are noted for their remarkable simplicity coupled with elegance.” As stated in the June 9, 1961 edition of the New York Times, Pauline Trigѐre’s garments are made with exceptional detail and skill. The Parisian designer, who immigrated to the United States prior to WWII, set up shop on Seventh Avenue with a small inventory of dresses and a large range of skills. This never-worn coat from the mid-1960s is the rarest of finds. Constructed from a brocade of black chenille and metallic yarns, the crisp and modish silhouette sits in thoughtful contrast to the luxurious femininity of the material. A tight rounded neckline closes at center front with a generous right-side overlap that is secured internally with hand-set snaps. The oversized buttons become a subtle, yet dominant feature of this coat. They are both 1960s-mod in scale and Victorian in style, extending the “old-new” dialogue that this coat engages in. Made from looped woven ribbon, the button florets are set into circular lacquered wood bases. The brocaded fabric is seamed sparingly, allowing the beauty of the pattern and sheen of the fabric run as uninterrupted as possible. Side slit pockets are snuck into seaming. Slimly cut hand set sleeves taper down to the wrist for a trim look. Full black silk satin lining makes this coat a dream to slip in to; wearing a garment of this quality feels almost decadent. Trigѐre’s expert understanding of fabric and fashion wears as well today as it did in the 1960s. Made from a floral brocade of black chenille and metallic copper and gold threads, this 19th century inspired fabric is cleverly combined with a crisply tailored modern silhouette.
