Pauline Trigère was a prominent figure in putting American designers on the map. Like many of the acclaimed French couturiers, she was an expert at tailoring and had an eye for interesting volumes. However true-to-form of the American aesthetic, Trigère designs are known for their relative simplicity and elegance through ease. Done in a black cotton silk voile featuring a vivid print, this dress is elegant and eye-catching. The bodice is constructed from strips of the cotton silk voile that are pieced and stitched together with pink thread, giving it a unique texture that creates a pleasing rhythm throughout. The colorful floral print is done in shades of bright purple, blue, pink, and orange, which is punctuated by cut out shapes that reveal the black ground beneath, making incredible use of negative space. The beautifully draped, midi-length skirt falls in pleats from the fitted waistline in three layers, the hem floating just above the ankles. The sheer first layer gives the dress an ethereal feel, while the under layers of black silk and nude chiffon bring depth to the print as well as a fullness to the otherwise columnar silhouette of the dress. The pattern on the bodice repeats itself several times along the length of the skirt in various formations, and is interspersed with sections of plain black silk, which offers a stunning contrast to the medley of color.
