Frank Dekkers (1961) is a landscape painter par excellence. Full of dedication and diligence he always works on location outdoors, defying the elements. The weather plays an important role in his work: an emerging early winter, heavy summer rain, lightning storms and flaming sunsets form endless sources of inspiration. Like 19th century painters as Monet or Renoir he takes his easel, panel and oil paint outside where Frank finds the peace and quiet to create his paintings. Being outside, experiencing the landscape, the passing of the day, is what makes him paint. Dekkers masters many techniques, such as etching, woodcutting, ink drawing and painting in oil. Whatever the technique he uses, his work is always recognizable by his unique signature. He can accurately depict the essence of the landscape, using minimal resources. By reducing his subjects to lines, surfaces, colors and light, he shows us his interpretation of the landscape without it becoming unrecognizable to those who haven’t been there. Urbex is the English acronym for urban exploration and is an activity that consists of searching for and locating abandoned infrastructure with the goal of visiting, photographing and conveying its contents, with particular involvement of methodologies from geography, anthropology, sociology to cultural studies. Aeling’s winters in Hawaii deepened his sensitivity to movement and weather. Surfing taught him to read the rhythm of the ocean, a knowledge reflected in Wave, Kauai (2018), where a breaking wave becomes a luminous wall of force. In Volcano (2023), he channels the islands’ elemental drama, linking fire, vapor, and sky through the same atmospheric vocabulary found in his plains paintings. Though often compared to American landscape painters like Church and Bierstadt, Aeling’s work engages modernity in subtle ways. He began his paintings with the camera—driving for hours to capture a fleeting alignment of cloud, light, and terrain. In the studio, he removed all traces of people or infrastructure, preserving the landscape as a pure, uncontrollable presence. This blend of tradition and contemporary practice allowed him to honor the past while speaking clearly to the present. Together, these works—whether a crashing wave, a blooming tree, a volcanic plume, or a column of winter light—form a portrait of the world as Aeling experienced it: vast, luminous, and alive with change.
