A Derby porcelain dish with a named botanical flower: a single beautiful gladiola painted in the late 18th century by the renowned artist Quaker Pegg. The combination of the various shades of orange with the touches of purple, and the subtle shades of the green leaves, make this an extraordinary work of art. The border of this shell shaped dish is beautifully gilded. Written in underglaze blue on the back of the dish is "Gladiolus Cardinalis, Superb Gladiolus" Over the Derby marks with the numerals 197 indicating the painter Quaker Pegg. Dimensions: 9.5" x 9" Condition: Excellent Price: $1450 Background of Quaker Pegg: Born at Whitmore, near Newcastle-under-Lyme on 10th May 1775, his family moved to Shelton in the Potteries two years later. In 1785 at just 10 years of age, Pegg was put to work in an earthenware factory. Three years later he began to learn the art of decorating on earthenware before becoming apprenticed to a china factory in 1790. In the autumn of 1796, having completed his apprenticeship he moved to Derby to begin his employment at the Nottingham Road factory where he worked until 1801. In 1756 three men, John Heath a Derby banker, Andrew Planche a ‘china maker’ and William Duesbury an enameler from Staffordshire, entered into an agreement by which they became “co-partners together as well in the art of making English China as also in buying and selling all sorts of wares belonging to the art of making china”. The partnership was immediately successful and within a short period large quantities of good quality china were being dispatched to eager markets in London to be sold by their Factor, a Mr. Williams, at his warehouse at Craig's Court, Charing Cross.
