R.C. Gorman Prints and Multiples
American, 1931-2005
Rudolph Carl Gorman was an American artist, born on July 26, 1931, in Canyon de Chelly, Arizona. He was raised in a traditional hogan, on the Navajo Reservation. He became one of the Southwest USA's most famous and celebrated Native American artists. His signature works were Navajo women in a variety of poses. Referred to as the Picasso of American Indian Artists by The New York Times, his paintings are primarily of Native American women and characterized by fluid forms and vibrant colors, though he also worked in sculpture, ceramics and stone lithography. In 1973, the Metropolitan Museum of Art included several Rudolph’s works in an exhibition on Native American art and in 1986, Harvard University honored him for his notable contributions to American art and Native American culture. His admirers included Andy Warhol, who painted him on several occasions and who was among the many celebrities, who collected his art. He was also the author of a series of popular cookbooks. Gorman died on November 3, 2005, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Shalom of Sefad (Shulem der Zeigermacher in Yiddish Shalom Moskowitz) Shalom of Tzfat lived for over seventeen years in his native town of Safed in the hills of the Galilee. With short cropped silvery white hair and red lipstick, the female figure in center (suggestive of a stylized flapper) squeezes the atomizer of her perfume bottle misting herself in fragrance. Skyscraper style geometric forms suggesting elaborately faceted gemstones- in hues of rose, lavender, orange sapphire and yellow diamond- explode around her, suggesting the stage design for the set of the iconic film "Metropolis". The top of the composition features a bronze color block reading "DeVilbiss Perfume sprays" and in scrolling Deco lettering text reads “A drop of perfume bursting into myriad atoms of fragrance makes the use of perfume an added delight” near the bottom of the piece. Additionally, there is a solid black color block with crystalline black forms emanating outwards at the base of the composition, as well as a geometric abstract form on the right side of the piece imbuing it with a distinctly modernist inflection.
