Remo Brindisi

Italian, 1918-1996

Remo Brindisi is considered one of the greatest Italian artists of the 20th century. Involved in the artistic environment since childhood, he has studied at the Penne School of Art, where his father taught sculpture, the Rome University of Fine Arts and at the Institute of Art for Book Illustration. Brindisi fought with the Italian army during the Second World War and moved to Florence, where he came into contact with many artists of the time such as Carena, Soffici and Rosai. Brindisi’s painting is strongly expressionist with informal tendencies and imbued with social and political purposes. The recurring subjects are motherhood, shepherd children, opponents and the Venetians represented as nightmares, the result of the traumatic events caused by war, horror and guilt. The Milanese years (since 1947) are characterized by a cubist flattening, which is the result of the controversy between realists and abstractionists and its integration into the Linea group. In 1970, Brindisi founded the Alternative Museum in Lido di Spina, where he collected works by contemporary Italian and foreign artists. He was appointed president of the Milan Triennale and was awarded the gold medal of public education for cultural merits.

Joseph Gibbs Florida Highwaymen Wetland Heron Painting, Oil on Canvas, C. 1970s
Located in West Palm Beach, FL
Joseph Gibbs Florida Highwaymen Wetland Heron Painting, Oil on Canvas, Circa 1970s A serene and beautifully executed Florida wetland landscape by Joseph Gibbs, one of the original and most respected members of the Florida Highwaymen. Painted circa the 1970s, this atmospheric composition depicts white herons gliding and wading through still waters beneath moss-draped cypress trees, a subject closely associated with Gibbs’ strongest and most collectible work. Executed in oil on canvas, the painting demonstrates the hallmarks of the Highwaymen tradition: luminous sky tones, reflective water rendered in layered greens and blues, and expressive foliage achieved through confident, gestural brushwork. The elegant placement of the herons adds movement and contrast, lending the scene a quiet sense of life and balance. Gibbs was particularly admired for his handling of water and wetlands, and this example shows his ability to convey depth, light, and Florida’s subtropical atmosphere with ease. The canvas measures 20 inches by 24 inches and is presented in a period-appropriate faux bamboo frame, consistent with the frames commonly used when Highwaymen paintings were originally sold roadside and door-to-door. Signed lower left, the work remains in very good vintage condition. A classic and highly decorative example of an authentic Florida Highwaymen painting...
