Rezalia Thrash Paintings

American, 1893-1982

Rezalia C Thrash was the first African-American woman to exhibit her artwork in a juried Texas Art Show. Thrash, a teacher, painter, and club woman. She was born in Waco and educated in Texarkana. She held a Bachelor's degree from Prairie View State Normal and Industrial College and Wilberforce University and a Master's degree in art education from Greeley State Teacher's College in Colorado. Her husband, N. N. Thrash was the long-time bell captain at Dallas's Southland Hotel. Thrash taught in the Dallas school district at several elementary schools and Lincoln High School from 1922–67. She received a distinguished service award in art education from the Dallas Independent School District Over her lifetime. Thrash’s affiliations included a number of professional organizations and women's clubs, including the Priscilla Art Club and the Credenza Art Club. Thrash was an art teacher at B.F. Darrell Elementary School in 1935 when her watercolor, Parrots, was among the 162 works chosen from 383 entries for inclusion in the Seventh Annual Dallas Allied Arts Exhibition. It was the first work by a black artist to be shown in an integrated show. Although an important advance, its effect on the black community was limited by the fact that the show was only open to them for two hours during its four-week run, from 8:00-10:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17. Thrash also showed paintings in the 1948 and 1950 exhibitions.

Hollywood, 1941, oil on board, 18 x 24 inches, signed and dated lower right, illegible writing verso About the Painting From a distance, Beckwith deftly captures the spectacle of a Hollywood premiere. But we have not been invited to the party. Our view is from the shadows of a less glamorous neighborhood with a shaggy, unkept palm tree and rundown buildings in the shadows. We look down through the darkness past a packed parking lot to the bright lights of two iconic Hollywood landmarks, the Pantages Theater and the Broadway Building. Completed in 1930, the Pantages was built as an exuberant Art Deco movie palace, while the Broadway Building housed an upscale department store which catered to entertainment industry elites who were less impacted by the Great Depression than the common man, since movies had become the mainstay of popular culture entertainment during the 1930s with large numbers of Americans looking to immerse themselves in Hollywood escapism. Here, in a rare Los Angeles urban image, Beckwith combines that Hollywood fantasy with the more sobering foreground images which could have been pulled from the L.A. Noire fiction of Raymond Chandler...

Jon Blanchette “East Santa Cruz, California” Mid-Century Original Oil Painting
By Jon Blanchette
Located in Denver, CO
This vibrant mid-20th-century oil painting, “East Santa Cruz (California)” by noted California artist Jon Blanchette (1908–1987), beautifully captures the dramatic atmosphere of the coastal landscape. A luminous yellow farmhouse stands in striking contrast to a sweeping sky of deep gray storm clouds, creating a compelling interplay of serenity and impending weather. Blanchette’s refined brushwork and masterful use of color highlight his gift for evoking mood, light, and the quiet poetry of the California coast. Painted on canvas board, the work exemplifies Blanchette’s signature romantic realism, combining inviting detail with expressive atmospheric effects. The painting is professionally presented in a custom archival frame, enhancing its depth, texture, and timeless appeal.
