"Inspired by Matisse, this work is about line, color, pattern rather than strict representation," says artist Robert Hofherr. "The point here is to thoroughly enjoy exuberantly putting brush to canvas. Anything that inhibits this experience will be detrimental to the final painting. The color palette here has been reduced by the elimination of any true reds and little true yellow."

This dramatic rendering of the famous Scottish lake relies on mostly short, choppy strokes of thick paint to build color and texture. The composition is designed to direct the viewer to the surface of the loch in the distance, which almost glows as it reflects the light from above. "Hopefully this work captures some of the rugged beauty of the Scottish landscape," says Robert. The sides of the gallery wrapped canvas are painted a complementary brown.

During his free time he enjoys spending time with his kids, walking his dogs and taking road trips to out-of-way places in the mid-Atlantic region. He currently lives in Maryland.
