Robert Polidori Art

Canadian, American, b. 1951

Photographer Robert Polidori is inspired by the interior environments of everyday life. He is acclaimed for his contemporary style and is known for his visually stunning large-scale color photography. Each image captures the rich details of a place where people have lived, worked, played and loved.

Polidori was born in Montréal, Canada, and moved to the United States as a child. Early in his career, he was an assistant to the celebrated avant-garde filmmaker Jonas Mekas at Anthology Film Archives in New York. This experience shaped his perspectives on photography, particularly the relationship between still images and time. Today, his photographs are a mediation on how architecture conveys history and memory.

Polidori lived in Paris in the early 1980s. While there, he documented the interior restoration of the Palace of Versailles and has returned to photograph its ongoing changes ever since. Polidori also documented the aftermath of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster and the deteriorating mansions of Havana, Cuba. In 2005, he photographed the destruction of New Orleans caused by Hurricane Katrina and later exhibited the photos in a solo show called “After the Flood.”

Polidori’s work is in museum collections around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec in Montréal and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. He is a two-time recipient of the Alfred Eisenstaedt Award for Magazine Photography (in 1999 and 2000) and was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship for photography in 2020. Polidori’s photographs have been the subject of numerous books released by the German publisher Steidl.

In 2015, Polidori moved to Ojai, California, where he continues to live and work. His recent photograph collection, Dendritic Cities, focuses on the urban growth of cities like Mumbai, Amman and Rio de Janeiro.

Price for UNFRAMED item The Robin Rice Gallery proudly announces SUMMERTIME Salon 2018, an annual photography exhibit featuring gallery artists as well as a few newcomers. This year’s opening reception will be held on Wednesday, June 27th from 6 – 8 PM, and the show will be on view until September 23rd, 2018 Rice has brought together the works of 55 gallery artists and nearly a hundred photographs for this salon-style exhibition. From floor to ceiling, the walls of the gallery are a mosaic of various size photographs in sepia, color and black & white, expertly hung to fit together like pieces of a puzzle. “This is my favorite exhibition even though it takes months to curate and a week to install,” says Rice. “I love the moment when a viewer is first drawn to an image. Sometimes in’s indefinable; a moment when the viewer not only shares but reconnects to an experience remembered.” Each year, the Summertime Salon matures and Rice’s annual masterpiece is revealed to showcase an exhibition stronger than the year before. Rice has a close relationship with the works of her photographers, and strategically curates the show to best exemplify the artists’ strengths, remaining cohesively linked by Rice’s aesthetic. This year’s invitational image, Hoop and Ball by Nenad Samuilo Amodaj is from a series of one hundred photographs. Rice chose three photographs from Amodaj’s series to create a triptych on the back wall of her gallery for this exhibition. The invitational image is of a standing semi-nude woman in profile wearing a hoop skirt. Her entire head rests inside of a large white plaster ball that she holds above her. He explained: “I wanted to explore the abstract architectural properties of the hoop skirt, a clothing item with curious geometric form that appears both in nature and in the world of artifice.” Before photographing the model he created numerous figure drawings that helped solidify his vision for the series. Untitled (from Upstate)
By Richard Prince
Located in Calabasas, CA
Artist: Richard Prince Title: Untitled (from Upstate) Year: 1998 Medium: Ektacolor photograph on Kodak Professional paper Edition: 8; signed, dated and numbered (verso) Sheet: 20 x 24 inches (50.8 x 61 cm) Frame: Yes Certificate of Authenticity included This early, vintage work from 1998 by Richard Prince is part of his "Upstate" series. In 1996 Richard Prince moved to upstate New York and began a new series of creative investigations. After almost two decades of making work derived from images and phrases that already exist in popular culture, he took his camera outside and photographed the banal details of his everyday environment. Although this could be viewed as a radical departure, to Prince there is no essential difference between making photos of other photos and making photos of the world at large. He is always paying attention to what is around him with intense scrutiny. On one level, the "Upstate" photos chronicle a landscape of economic decline in an unremarkable semirural area. Pictures of above-ground swimming pools and melancholy images of abandoned-looking basketball hoops perched on the edge of overgrown fields suggest a region cut off from the cultural mainstream. However, Prince finds quiet moments of beauty in these overlooked and undervalued features of the landscape. The "Upstate" series typifies Prince's process of making art through the reproduction and displacement of pop culture iconography, often with a touch of mordant humor, an approach that has been deeply influential in the development of appropriation art since the 1960s, and which has invited comparisons between Prince and contemporaries such as Barbara Kruger, Sherrie Levine, and Jack Goldstein...
