Rose Hartman Portrait Photography
A native New Yorker, Rose Hartman found her true calling for photography while working for the SoHo Weekly News. Her first glitz assignment was the 1976 wedding of Joan Hemingway, to New York restauranteur Jean De Noyer. Hartman's coverage was published on the cover of the Daily News-Record, a prominent fashion publication.
She was one of the very early photographers - taking her camera where nobody else wanted to: backstage at fashion shows where the real excitement was.
Her keen eye offered unprecedented visual entree to the creative personalities who transformed New York into the most fascinating city in the world.
For more than four decades, Hartman has photographed fashion and celebrity icons in some of the most legendary setting of New York nightlife, from Studio 54 to the Metropolitan Museum's Costume Institute Gala.
Hartman's work appears in The New York Times, London Sunday Times, Vanity Fair, Vogue (US, French, Dutch, and Italian), New York Magazine, Marie Claire, Allure, Elle Magazine, Grazia, Le Journal de la Photographique, Colette, The Daily Beast, W, Rolling Stone, Carine Roitfield Fashion Book, among many other international publications including fashion books.

Lora Webb Nichols was born in 1883 and grew up in the small mining town of Encampment, Wyoming. At the age of 16 Lora received her first camera and from that moment and for the next few decades she produced work that is both stunning in its singular voice and revealing in the world it opens up for us.
At first Nichols photographed her family, friends, and the landscape around Encampment, but when the town experienced a copper mining boom Nichols expanded her scope to become a photographer for hire shooting portraits and industrial photographs. When the boom collapsed, Nichols took the risk of opening her own business in Encampment - The Rocky Mountain Studio - which opened in 1925. The studio ran for ten years, accumulating 24,000 negatives that illustrate the lives and environment of the people living in and around the town while creating a distinctive and surprising body of work. If one was to attempt an analogy – Nichols’ pictures fit somewhere between Lartigue and Lange - joyful and generous while objectively intimate. In particular what seems to distinguish Nichols’ work is the way she sees the world from a female perspective. As Vince Aletti...

ABOUT:
For the last two years Mark and Kristen have collaborated using one of the earliest photographic methods, collodion wet plate to create ambrotypes on glass and tintypes on aluminum. They use a 1860 style view camera to create one-of-a-kind images, which become windows into an intimate, romantic, and beautiful world of faces, still lives, nudes, and landscapes. In this demanding process, the collodion coated tin or glass plates are immersed in a silver nitrate solution, and then they must be exposed in the camera and developed while still wet. Serendipitous flaws and beautiful imperfections are an inevitable part of this imprecise hands-on process.
This show includes a combination of 24 tintypes and ambrotypes, which are 8x10 and smaller in size. Their intimate sizes ask the viewers to look closer and spend more time with these photographs to fully appreciate their power. — A welcome antidote to today's nonstop, ¬instantaneous imagery. Paradoxically, this intersection of past and present gives these pieces an unmistakably contemporary feel. The two collaborators deliberately play up the ambiguity of time.
The nudes (some recalling E.J. Bellocq's alluring portraits of New Orleans prostitutes in 1912) are suffused with freshness and sensuality, even eroticism at times, with nearly all of them coming off as refined rather than crass.
Fredrick Scott...
